Saving Flora: Movie Analysis

Saving Flora is an Adventure movie wherein it tells the journey of the circus
owner’s 14-year-old daughter, Dawn, travelling with Flora to keep her safe. The film
involves Jenna Ortega (Dawn), Martin Martinez (Sebastian), and, our main character,
Tai (Flora). This film was released back at October 2018 and was directed by Mark
Drury Taylor with production companies of Dream Factory Group, FJ Productions,
Collaborate Films, and DFG Production.
The characters wore always simple, thin clothing. Sebastian had curly, black hair
while Dawn had straight, black hair. Both of them were witty in some way and were
determined to fulfill their goals. Aside from that, Saving Flora was filmed at Piru,
California, USA and used a real-life elephant named Tai. Before the main character
arrived on set, Tai was reportedly to have gone through abuse when she was trained to
be used on a film six years before Saving Flora came out.
From the start, we can see the struggling life of Henry, Dawn’s father and the
circus owner, and his companions on earning money without Flora. Flora, who is what
the audience wants to see, cannot perform anymore. Because of this, Henry ought to
euthanize Flora. When Dawn, his 14-year-old daughter found this out, she sneaked
Flora out of the circus and had a goal of reaching the elephant preserve that was
200-kilometers of woods and deserts, one raging river, two elephant hunters, and the
fear of not making it. Worried that her daughter and Flora are both missing, Henry
started to find her daughter alongside Isabella, one of his circus performers, with the
help of the sheriff.
In the middle of all that, when Dawn and Flora witnessed a thief being violated by
a farmer, they became friends with that thief upon saving him. His name was Sebastian
and, as sweet as their friendship can be, he had a goal of making Dawn and Flora go to
Sabinas in order for him to gain benefit, the opposite of Dawn’s goal. In multiple scenes,
Sebastian saw Dawn almost giving up from saving Flora yet he pushed Dawn to keep
fighting even though he seemed like a villain for the crowd I was with as I watched the
movie.
After going through a lot of woods, the rain, deserts, mountains, and a river with
two elephant hunters going after them, Dawn eventually found out Sebastian’s true
goal. Because of this, Dawn was angry at Sebastian for being friends with her and
pushed him away. Sebastian suddenly realized what he had done wrong and decided to
make up for it. After nightfall, Dawn suddenly fell off a cliff and couldn’t go back up.
When Sebastian found Flora near the cliff, he didn’t think twice to save its owner. They
became friends again and Sebastian now had the goal of helping Dawn to get Flora to
the elephant preserve.
When Dawn and Sebastian woke up, they suddenly knew that the elephant
hunters got Flora and did their best to save her. After a few minutes of car chasing with
the sheriff and his father, Dawn realized that her and Flora’s journey raised a charity to
save Flora and put her where she belonged with millions of people worldwide helping
them. At the end, Dawn was now the new star of her father’s circus and Flora had a
daughter named Samantha. All of the characters then lived happily ever after.
To add additional information to this movie analysis, the film used the following
camera angles and shots: high angle, reverse shot, birds-eye view, over the shoulder,
two shot, medium, establishing, close-up, eye level, and extreme close shot. The
lighting of each scene also made you feel the hot temperature of the deserts Dawn,
Flora, and Sebastian travelled through to make it to the elephant preserve.
To conclude what I analyzed about Saving Flora, it is a heartwarming movie
perfect for families to watch with a soundtrack playing every happy and fulfilling
moments. It is simple yet touching, and uses several techniques to complete the film’s
aesthetic.
