Resultant Forces Worksheet

This document is a worksheet about resultant forces with 4 multi-part questions. It asks the student to: 1) Calculate the resultant force acting on a car from a diagram and describe its motion. 2) Identify which diagram represents the forces on a cyclist traveling at a constant 9m/s based on the length of arrows and explain their choice. 3) Identify which forces need to be equal for a BASE jumper wearing a wingsuit to accelerate or fall at constant speed, and explain how opening a parachute affects the jumper's speed. 4) Calculate forces on a swimmer from diagrams, including the initial resultant force when the swimmer accelerates by increasing one force,

  • Resultant Forces Calculations: Presents physics problems related to resultant forces with scenarios for calculation and interpretation, including a vehicle on a road, a cyclist, and a swimmer's motion.

RESULTANT FORCES WORKSHEET /18mks

Do not write on the question sheet. Show all calculations and use appropriate SI unit.

1. The diagram sows the horizontal forces acting on a car travelling on a straight road.
a) Calculate the size of the resultant force
acting on the car [2].
b) Describe the motion of the car when
the forces shown in the diagram act on
it. [2]

2. The diagrams below show the

horizonal forces acting on the cyclist at three
different speeds. The length of the arrow
represents the size of the force.
a) Which one of the diagrams represents the
forces acting when the cyclist is travelling at a
constant 9m/s? [1]
b) Explain the reason for your choice. [2]

3. "BASE" is an acronym that stands for four categories of fixed

objects from which one can jump: building, antenna, span,
and earth (cliff).BASE jumpers jump from very high buildings
and mountains for sport. The diagram below shows the forces
acting on base jumper in flight wearing a wingsuit.
a) The BASE jumper accelerates forward when a force A is
____________ to force B. [1]
b) The BASE jumper falls with a constant speed when force C is___________ to force D. [1]

To land safely the base jumper needs a parachute.

c) What effect does opening the parachute have on the speed of the
falling BASE jumper? [1]
d) Give a reason for your answer. [2]

4. The diagram below shows horizontal forces acting on a swimmer

moving at a constant
speed.
a) Force T is 120N, what is
the size of force D? [2]
b) By increasing force T to 140N , the swimmer accelerates to a higher speed. Calculate the size of
the initial resultant force acting on the swimmer ass he accelerates. [2]
c) The swimmer now keeps the force T constant at 140N ,the resultant force decreases to zero.
Explain why. [2]
