BATCHIM 받침
This is the lower consonant of a syllable. Example: 방 [bang], the batchim is ‘ㅇ’ consonant
because it is the lower consonant of the syllable.

CONJUGATION
Conjugation means the change in a verb (or adjective) form to adjust the tense, mood,
voice or person. Conjugation does not only apply for present tense but for other grammar
forms. In Korean, conjugation applies to all verbs and adjectives with the grammar you
apply to it.

DICTIONARY FORM & STEM

Verbs and adjectives before they are conjugated to present, past, future tense, and other
grammar forms, they start with the dictionary form which consists of the STEM + 다. To get
the stem of the verb or adjective just remove 다 from the dictionary form.

English translation Korean [romanization] Stem

VERB To do 하다 [ha-da] 하

VERB To eat 먹다 [meok-da] 먹

VERB To drink 마시다 [ma-shi-da] 마시

ADJECTIVE To be pretty 예쁘다 [ye-ppeu-da] 예쁘

ADJECTIVE To be big 크다 [keu-da] 크

ADJECTIVE To be small 작다 [jak-da] 작

If the verb is already conjugated to a 습니다/ㅂ니다 present tense-formal like 갑니다, 합니다,
입니다 … this is not the dictionary form!!
갑니다 ‘go’ , the dictionary form is 가다 which applied the ㅂ니다 present tense-formal
합니다 ‘do’ , the dictionary form is 하다 which applied the ㅂ니다 present tense-formal
입니다 ‘is/are/am’ , the dictionary form is 이다 which applied the ㅂ니다 present tense-formal

It’s better to start learning verbs and adjectives’ dictionary form and learn conjugations after.

IRREGULAR VERBS
There are seven (7) Irregular verb conjugations.

‘르’ Irregular
‘ㄹ’ Irregular
‘ㅂ’ Irregular

“How do I know if a verb is regular or irregular?” - by memorizing them. Unfortunately, even

Native Koreans have a difficult time to tell a non-Native speaker which verb or adjective is
regular or irregular because they just know by memory and instinct.

The only way for us non-Natives to know a REGULAR and IRREGULAR VERB is to
MEMORIZE THEM AND PRACTICE CONJUGATING. If you don’t practice, then it will always
be difficult. The more you practice, the better you will memorize them.

This reviewer will help you cover the most basic irregular verbs to guide you.
We will learn how to conjugate the simple present tense-polite (아요/어요) and a few other
common grammar rules for these irregular verbs

‘ㄹ’ Irregular Verbs
Now we will learn about conjugating verbs or adjectives that have the ‘ㄹ’ batchim in the
last syllable of the stem.

① When we conjugate to simple present tense-polite 아요/어요 or other grammar

that use 아/어 like 아서/어서 (‘because’) or 았/었 (past tense), etc. the ‘ㄹ’ batchim
verbs and adjectives have no changes and we conjugate normally.

Simple present Reason/Cause Past tense

tense-polite ‘because’ 았/었
아요/어요 아서/어서 만들다
살다 놀다 만들
살 놀 만들 + 었 + 어요
살 + 아요 놀 + 아서 만들었어요
살아요 놀아서
However, simple present tense-polite is not the only grammar form in Korean.

② When we apply other grammar forms that start with a ㄴ,ㅂ,ㅅ or begin with 으
such as: (으)세요, ㅂ니다/습니다, (으)ㄹ까요, etc. the ‘ㄹ’ is removed and the stem acts
like a vowel ending so you attach the one for vowel endings. This is when it
becomes irregular.

Imperative command Simple present Propositive suggestion

‘Please…’ tense-Formal ‘Shall…’
(으)세요 ㅂ니가/습니다 (으)ㄹ까요
살다 놀다 만들다
살 놀 만들

‘ㅅ’ Irregular Verbs
Now we will learn about conjugating verbs or adjectives that have the ‘ㅅ’ batchim in the
last syllable of the stem.

I think you have realized by now that REGULAR and IRREGULAR verbs exist so let’s check
out the ones with ‘ㅅ’ batchim.

① REGULAR ‘ㅅ’ - These are the verbs and adjectives which are regular that just
follow the same conjugation rules for regular verbs (refer back to the REGULAR
VERBS simple present tense-polite)

Korean English Simple present tense

씻다 To wash 씻어요

벗다 To take off; to undress 벗어요

② IRREGULAR ‘ㅅ’ for grammar beginning with a ‘ㅇ’ consonant (e.g. 아요/어요,
았/었, 으세요, 으면, 을까요?,etc.) remove the ‘ㅅ’ batchim and conjugate with stem as
if it’s still a consonant ending stem.

짓다 낫다
짓 낫
지 나
지 + 어요 나 + 아요

Conjugating English Simple present tense polite

짓다 To build; to 지 + 어요 → 지어요
(we do not contract 지어요 to
짓 name; to
져요 like regular verbs)
지 write

36
낫다 To be cured; 나 + 아요 → 나아요
(we do not contract 나아요 to
낫 to be better
나요 like regular verbs)

If the grammar starts with an 으 like 을 거예요, 으세요, 으면, 을까요, etc. even if we remove
the ‘ㅅ’ in the batchim, the stem will act like it ends with a consonant.

Declarative possibility Future tense-polite

‘If…’ ‘will’
으면 을 거예요
낫다 짓다
낫 짓
나 지
나 + 으면 지 + 을 거예요
나으면 지을 거예요

ENDING REMARKS
You did it! You completed the CONJUGATION REVIEWER! I hope you find this conjugation
reviewer helpful and that it helps you in your Korean language studies. This reviewer was
not meant to be a complete grammar book that has all the grammar rules with examples
and translations. This is only meant to guide a learner in conjugation rules which can be
difficult to master without practice. Now you are aware that conjugation is just changing
the verb or adjective with the grammar and following the rules.

This is just the beginning to reviewers I plan to create and there will be more reviewers and
guides to be made in the future.

Korean language learning is a life-long journey to discovering new and wonderful things
about Korean language and culture. If you found anything difficult in this reviewer, I have a
quote for you:

Difficulties mastered are opportunities won - Winston Churchill

Something that looks difficult now is just a matter of accepting that things take time to be
understood. It seems complicated because it may be your first time to see these rules. Use
the time you have to master what is difficult. Later on, you will learn and understand. If not
now then in the near future and that is an opportunity to learn.

I appreciate you taking the time to read these remarks.
