TEMPLATE FOR MODULE 1: SYNCHRONOUS ACTIVITY

Assignment Title:

ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES: FILIPINOS’ RICH CULTURE AND HERITAGE

Name: Rei Vincent F. Gatchalian

Subject: Art Appreciation Section: BAB

INSTRUCTIONS:

Write a one-paragraph essay answering the question: How does the product or artifact
express the Filipino concept of art?
Since the usage of abaca in creating various and distinct crafts is a reflection, per se, of our
Filipino culture and abundant natural resources, the product I presented, specifically the ‘abaca
slippers’, already possesses the attribute of being a Filipino product—using materials that are
native to our country. Relatively, with regard to its implication as a Filipino concept of art, which
as discussed is different to that of ‘craft’, this ‘abaca slippers’, to say the least, exerts our ingenuity
and uniqueness as Filipinos—that it can be easily distinguished as something truly ours based
alone on its qualities and designs. The first noticeable feature about this ‘abaca slippers’ is its
weaving patterns, which are quite common in abaca products. The said pattern created this pleasing
visual effect and detail, suggesting not only our artistic culture but also our craftsmanship; this is
already an indication of Filipino concept of both arts and crafts. To add, our art is generally
considered as colorful, vibrant, and therefore, lively. If we are to examine the color details of abaca
slippers, we would notice how such actually comes with different color combinations as well as
shapes to make it visually appealing to people. Filipinos are well-known in this ‘genre’ of art as
colorful designs, similar to these abaca slippers, are typically seen also in Filipino vehicles and
festivals. Abaca slippers may be unusual to use as a footwear currently—since leather and rubber
are most of the time the preferred options—but it sure does convey a lot about us Filipinos, about
Philippine arts and crafts.
