ASSURANCE OF SALVATION

How can I get assurance of my salvation?

How can I know if I am saved?

The Bible teaches us that the security of true salvation comes from God and not of ourselves.
Salvation is based upon the grace of God, which brings us to faith and confidence in Christ, not
in our feelings and emotions. We must not be misguided in our thinking, believing that we have
salvation if we really do not. Neither should we permit Satan to rob us of our security if we really
have been converted to Jesus Christ and belong to Him.

Can you really know if you are Saved?

1. We can have the assurance of our salvation because of what God the
Father has done.
A. God made us His children.
1 Peter 2:9-10 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy
9

nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath
called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; Which in time past were not
10

a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now
have obtained mercy.
Philippians 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for
the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

When a person repents of his sin, puts his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and
gives himself to the Lord, he becomes a son of God. I can never lose this
relationship!

B. God gave us His righteousness.

Romans 4:1-5 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to
1

the flesh, hath found? For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to
2

glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God,
3

and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the
4

reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but
5

believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Romans 4:1-5 tells us how we receive Jesus Christ, Verse 3 asks the question to
make us think. “For what saith the Scripture?” Discuss the word “counted”. It is a
term used in accounting. A transfer is made from one account to another.

John 1:12 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become
the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

We understand this action of receiving is to deposit our full confidence in Jesus

Christ.
C. We are His for all eternity. The true believer is safe in the hands of God.
John 10:27-29 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
27

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any
28

man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than
29

all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

We are eternally safe!

2. We can have the assurance of salvation because of what Christ Jesus has
done.
A. Our salvation was brought by Christ when He died on the cross, shedding
His blood to pay for our punishment.

After three days in the tomb Christ Jesus physically arose to us that He had done
all that was necessary to provide for us eternal salvation.

B. When Jesus Christ was crucified, His blood had to be shed.

Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and
without shedding of blood is no remission.

Time after time the Bible reminds us that Jesus Christ finished His work so that it
would never have to be repeated.

3. We can have the assurance of our salvation because of what the Holy Spirit
has done.
A. The moment that we give ourselves to Jesus Christ the Holy Spirit baptized
us into God’s family.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether
we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to
drink into one Spirit.

We have been placed into the family of God by the work of God.

B. From the moment we gave ourselves to Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit
entered our life, and put upon us His seal of ownership.
2 Corinthians 3:3-4 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of
3

Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God;
not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. And such trust have we
4

through Christ to God-ward:

Ephesians 1:13-14 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of
13

truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were
sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance
14

until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

C. The Holy Spirit lives in every Christian from the moment that he trusts in
Christ as his Savior.

The Holy Spirit does not come into us little by little.

4. What Happens if I sin? This is important because this is what makes most
Christians feel defeated – that they are not saved!
A. Is it possible for a Christian to sin? YES
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is
not in us.

B. Does God want a Christian to sin? NO

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if
any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

C. If a Christian sins, what is the one thing we are to do about it? Confess it to
God.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

D. When I sin, Who appears before God the Father in heaven on my behalf?
Jesus Christ.
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if
any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

E. What does a Christian lose if he sins? Fellowship with other Christians and
with GOD.
1 John 1:6-10 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness,
6

we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we
7

have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son
cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves,
8

and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive
9

us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have
10

not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

5. Remember these other Bible promises

A. 2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am
not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is
able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
God desires for us to know for sure we are saved and to whom we belong.

B. John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth
on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation;
but is passed from death unto life.

C. 1 John 5:10-11 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself:
10

he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the
record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to
11

us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

God wants us to know we belong to Him.
