Brass is any alloy consisting primarily of copper, usually with zinc. In some cases, copper with tin is considered a type of brass
brass alloys, their chemical compositions and the uses of the different types of brass.

Brass Alloys

Alloy Composition and Use

Admiralty brass 30% zinc and 1% tin, used to inhibit dezincification
60.66% copper, 36.58% zinc, 1.02% tin, and 1.74% iron.
Aich's alloy Corrosion resistance, hardness and toughness make it
useful for marine applications.
Less than 35% zinc, malleable, can be worked cold, used in
pressing, forging, or similar applications. Alpha brasses
Alpha brass
have only one phase, with face-centered cubic crystal
structure.

Prince's metal or Prince Rupert's alpha brass containing 75% copper and 25% zinc. Named
metal for Prince Rupert of the Rhine and used to imitate gold.

35–45% zinc and is suited for hot working. It contains both

Alpha-beta brass or Muntz metal α and β' phase; the β'-phase is body-centered cubic and is
or duplex brass harder and stronger than α. Alpha-beta brasses are usually
worked hot.
contains aluminium, which improves its corrosion
Aluminium brass resistance. Used for seawater service and in Euro coins
(Nordic gold).
contains an addition of arsenic and frequently aluminium
Arsenical brass
and is used for boiler fireboxes.
45–50% zinc content. Can only be worked hot producing a
Beta brass
hard strong metal that is suitable for casting.
30% zinc brass with good cold working properties. Used
Cartridge brass
for ammunition cases.
Common brass, or rivet brass 37% zinc brass, standard for cold working
dezincification resistant brass with a small percentage of
DZR brass
arsenic
95% copper and 5% zinc, softest type of common brass,
Gilding metal
used for ammunition jackets
65% copper and 35% zinc, has a high tensile strength and
High brass
is used for springs, rivets, screws
Leaded brass alpha-beta brass with an addition of lead, easily machined
as defined by California Assembly Bill AB 1953 contains
Lead-free brass
"not more than 0.25 percent lead content"
copper-zinc alloy containing 20% zinc, ductile brass used
Low brass
for flexible metal hoses and bellows
70% copper, 29% zinc, and 1.3% manganese, used in
Manganese brass
making golden dollar coins in the United States
60% copper, 40% zinc and a trace of iron, used as a lining
Muntz metal
on boats
Naval brass 40% zinc and 1% tin, similar to admiralty brass
70% copper, 24.5% zinc and 5.5% nickel used to make
Nickel brass
pound coins in the pound sterling currency
89% copper, 5% aluminium, 5% zinc, and 1% tin, used in
Nordic gold
10, 20 and 50 cts euro coins

an American term for the copper-zinc-tin alloy known as

gunmetal, and an alloy which is considered both a brass
and a bronze. Red brass usually contains 85% copper, 5%
Red brass tin, 5% lead, and 5% zinc. Red brass may be copper alloy
C23000, which is 14–16% zinc, 0.05% iron and lead, and
the remainder copper. Red brass also may also refer to
ounce metal, another copper-zinc-tin alloy.

Rich low brass (Tombac) 15% zinc, often used for jewelry
Tonval brass (also called
copper-lead-zinc alloy
CW617N or CZ122 or OT58)

brittle metal containing more than 50% zinc. White brass

may also refer to certain nickel silver alloys as well as Cu-
White brass Zn-Sn alloys with high proportions (typically 40%+) of tin
and/or zinc, as well as predominantly zinc casting alloys
with copper additive.

Yellow brass American term for 33% zinc brass

nsidered a type of brass, although this metal historically has been called bronze. This is a list of common

Following is a list of the elements commonly added to iron and their effects on the material:

Carbon: Carbon is the most important alloying element in steel and can be present up to 2% (although most welded

Manganese: Steels usually contain at least 0.3% manganese, which acts in a three-fold manner: it assists in deoxida

silicon as a deoxidizer. Some filler metals can contain up to 1.0% to provide enhanced cleaning and deoxidation for
contaminated surfaces. When these filler metals are used for welding of clean surfaces, the resulting weld metal stre

Sulfur: This is an undesirable impurity in steel rather than an alloying element. Special effort is made to eliminate or
steelmaking. In amounts exceeding 0.05%, it tends to cause brittleness and reduce weldability. Additions of sulfur in
to 0.3% will tend to improve the machinability of steel but impair weldability. These types of steel can be referred to a

Phosphorus: Phosphorus is also considered to be an undesirable impurity in steels. It is normally found in amounts u
carbon steels. In hardened steels, it tends to cause embrittlement. In low-alloy, high-strength steels, phosphorus can
up to 0.10% to improve both strength and corrosion resistance, although it is not generally added for this reason in c

Chromium: Chromium is a powerful alloying element in steel. It is added for two principal reasons: first, it greatly incr
hardenability of steel; second, it markedly improves the corrosion resistance of iron and steel in oxidizing types of m

Nickel: Nickel is added to steels to increase their hardenability. It performs well in this function because it often impro
and ductility of the steel, even with the increased strength and hardness. Nickel is frequently used to improve steel t
temperatures.
Vanadium: The addition of vanadium will result in an increase in the hardenability of steel. It is very effective in this r

Columbium: Columbium (also called niobium), like vanadium, is generally considered to increase the hardenability o
