JANUARY 2023. “WIRELESS NETWORK DESIGN AND
IMPLEMENTATION OF CABAGAN RIVERSIDE NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL” Undergraduate Capstone Project. Bachelor of Science in Information
Technology, Isabela State University, Cabagan Isabela.

Capstone Project Adviser: Engr. Jake D. La Madrid

The primary goal of the researchers in conducting this study was to design and
improve the network infrastructure of Cabagan Riverside National High School in
order to address the concern about limited internet access among the teachers and
students. The researchers designed a plan after conducting an in-depth review of the
school's existing network layout with the said aim.
Using the Network Development Life Cycle as the study's framework, several
attempts were made to test the enhanced network infrastructure's high availability.

The right equipment plays a vital role in network communication in terms of

expanding the coverage of a local area network connection. The Mikrotik Haplite,
routers, and wireless access points contributed to better and faster network service.
The researchers used Cat6 outdoor UTP cable, which has a higher bandwidth capacity
of up to 550 MHz, allowing a faster data transfer. Mikrotik Haplite was also
employed as a solution to limit the bandwidth of the routers and access points. The
Archer C24 Wi-Fi Router was selected for its ability to support both 2.4GHz and
5GHz frequency bands, providing a wider range and reducing interference from other
devices. It has a maximum wireless speed of 433 Mbps, allowing for faster internet
access and improved performance for users. It also has 4x LAN ports for wired
connections and a built-in access point mode for easy setup as a repeater. The TP-
Link TL-WR820N router was also selected for its ability to provide a strong and
stable internet connection, which is important for expanding the coverage area of an
organization. These routers have a user-friendly web interface that allow easy
management and configuration. Both the C24 AC750 and TP-Link TL-WR820N
routers were deemed appropriate choices for improving internet access at CRNHS due
to their dual-band capability, high speed, cost efficiency, and versatile features.

With these findings, it is recommended that the aforementioned network

hardware must be used as boosters for these were found effective in enhancing the
internet connection experience of the teachers and students. Further, the school must
upgrade their internet connection plan to a higher level in order to improve the
performance of their internet connection. Even those who limit the bandwidth of the
router can be increased in order to improve the performance of the internet
connection. Meanwhile, regular monitoring and maintenance of the wireless network
should be conducted to ensure that it continues to function at optimal levels.

.CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Network connectivity is the most fundamental part of any IT infrastructure

employees will depend on a variety of services daily. These include everything from

sending emails to clients and accessing project management tools to

videoconferencing with colleagues.

The majority of organization operations rely on the functioning of the

network, and an unreliable network can severely affect every operation. A secure

network infrastructure minimizes downtime and ensures that productivity remains as

consistent as possible, no matter what arises.

The school’s productivity and efficiency depend on more than just capable,

hardworking employees and high-functioning equipment like computers and phones.

Most businesses rely on the network to process customer orders and maintain client

records. Communication between the school and the employees is vital, and it

depends significantly on the network architecture. Consider the network infrastructure

to be the backbone of the daily operations, everything else in the business relies on the

strength and reliability of that backbone to operate successfully. Also, it requires a

robust and secure network architecture. Network without a solid infrastructure in

place are more likely to suffer from a poor user experience for employees and clients

or security issues that can affect employee productivity, increase costs, or even

damage brand reputation. It’s important to understand what network architecture

really means and why it’s vital. In the case of Cabagan Riverside National High

School, one of the public schools in the municipality of Cabagan, Isabela, the network

installed needs to be enhanced because most of the teachers have to go near the

administration office just to have a stable internet connection.

1
With the above-mentioned difficulties, the researchers developed a Wireless

Network Design in Cabagan Riverside National High School to ensure efficiency of

the connection of devices within a specific area. The network design primarily refers

to the hardware that enable network connectivity and communication between users,

devices, the internet, and more. As the world increasingly live in a digital world,

schools must use this kind of technology in order to facilitate more connected

experience in real time. As the hub of that connected environment, the network must

be fast, adaptable, flexible, and secure to make 21st century learning more productive

and efficient.

STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES

Generally, the study aimed to design and implement a network to improve the

set-up of the existing network in CRNHS.

Specifically, it aimed to:

1. design and implement a wireless access point;

2. limit the bandwidth of every wireless access point to be placed; and

3. evaluate the usability and efficiency of the Implemented WAP.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study aimed to design and implement a Wireless Network at Cabagan

Riverside National High School (CRNHS), specifically, to improve the network

infrastructure in the said school to be more efficient through the installation of router

and wireless access point in every office.

The project is limited to all users of Cabagan Riverside National High School,

San Juan, Cabagan, Isabela wherein all the school personnel can use the internet

2
connections in the limited mpbs set. In addition, a limited number of students can use

this as well whenever they have laboratory activities or presentations.

The project started on October 2022 and was completed in February 2023.

Significance of the Study

Technological advancement has rendered a big incitement to day-to-day

school activities. This project was conducted with the hope that its results will be

useful to the following:

The School Management - The developed Wireless Network will benefit the

Cabagan Riverside National High School to upgrade the WAN of the existing

network.

The Faculty and Staff - The study will help the teaching and non-teaching personnel

of CRNHS to finish immediately their job especially when it comes in doing

presentation, and accomplishing and submitting reports online, a stable connection

helps a lot. Also, teachers need not go to admin office just to have an internet

connection.

The students - On the part of students, having a stable connection during their

laboratory helps them finish the activities that are designed online and when they

search information for their projects.

The Future Researchers - This study will be helpful to future researchers who deem

to conduct similar project on boosting internet connection and creating networks.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This Chapter presents the review of related literature and studies which may

provide support to or oppose the proposed study.

One of the aspects that went along in the modernization across the globe in the

21st Century is the emergence of internet connectivity which advanced

communication, business industries, education, and the likes. A very fast internet

connectivity would mean a more efficient delivery of services. Telecommunication

has become an integral part of peoples’ daily lives and has been contributing widely

to the advancement in various fields. One of the emerging modes is Wireless

broadband technology which transmits multiplexed information on a wide band of

frequencies. The deployment of Wireless broadband services is done by weighing the

geographical population density against the bandwidth limitation. Wireless

technologies are designed to reduce the time and different types of obstacles created

by cables and more convenient than wired networking. In 1997, ‘Wireless fidelity’ -

popularly known as Wi-Fi technology was developed by IEEE 802.11 standards

which provided users the liberty to connect to the internet from any place. But this

service was pretty expensive till 2002, however the new 802.11g standards in 2003

has led to creation of Wi-Fi enabled devices to the masses as a result today a Wi-Fi

router has become a household commodity in most modern homes in India,

(International Journal of Scientific and Research Publications, 2015).

In a study conducted by David Ford, every organization’s network is unique,

establishing and maintaining a network infrastructure presents unique challenges for

4
educational institutions like schools, colleges, and universities. An educational

network infrastructure has the need for stringent security and safety whilst delivering

the speed and reliability to cope with the modern day demands of educational

resources. It has to be flexible and scalable so it can expand and grow with everyone’s

changing needs. To ensure mobility and flexibility of access, enabling its users to get

online whenever they were, whenever they want, and from any device, there is a need

to increase the network’s performance, which have been constrained to 1GbE, and

improve its management capabilities to give more control David Ford.

International Journal of Computer & Technology (2015), Wireless networks

have reduced the human intervention for accessing data at various sites. It is achieved

by replacing wired infrastructure with wireless infrastructure. Some of the key

challenges in wireless networks are Signal weakening, movement, increase data rate,

minimizing size and cost, security of user and QoS (Quality of service) parameters

Relevant to this, Michael (2019) presented a way to assess wireless networks which

states that it is the analysis of one’s current wireless installation that looks at specific

environmental, architectural and configuration factors that impact the performance

and functionality of one’s system.

Network hardware provides the most basic connectivity and completes

specialized tasks fast. As an example, hardware routers and firewalls have discrete

components that allow them to process more traffic per second than software running

on standard servers. As the very basis for everything that goes on top, network

hardware is the most crucial part of every network. That said, no modern business

relies on dedicated network hardware alone. This type of infrastructure must be paired

with higher level components as well (Science Logic Company). A company’s

5
network infrastructure must be free of errors in order for users, devices,

and applications to communicate with each other and business to go on as usual.

Companies must monitor their network infrastructure to ensure their processes are

executed in a reliable and secure manner. When companies grow, so does their

number of devices and applications – resulting in an increasingly complex network

infrastructure. For rapidly growing companies, network infrastructure monitoring is a

vital part of their day-to-day operations (Paessler, n.d). Similarly, this project embarks

on a solution to wireless services problem in a campus. It proposes a new approach to

support wireless mobile internet working on a large university campus or similar

environment. The architecture of the approach combines wireless local-area network

technology with high-speed switching technology (spraject). The network concepts

are based around relationships between entities such as organizations and people, and

the properties of networks studied relate to the structure of these relationships.

In a study conducted by Panganiban (2017), in this digital era, the lack of

access to computer and internet technology affects the teaching and learning process

of educators and students. The lack of facilities and the remoteness of an area could

serve as a contributing factor of Digital Divide. This is a heavy problem because the

students and educators experience unequal privilege to access to ICT that limits their

knowledge and skill. In addition to the study of Panganiban (2017), the lack of access

found in the school is similar to the thoughts of Mclaughlin (2016) who said that the

“lack of access to broadband is robbing millions of students of their full potential.” As

some participants have allegedly, they find this disparity between the situation in their

school and other schools to be unfair as they feel they are less capable than those

students who are not having the same lack of accessibility as they are.

6
Wireless network has significantly impacted the world since their initial

deployment. Wireless networks have continued to develop, and their uses have

significantly grown (Oguntala, 2014). In addition, wireless networks provide

communication to fixed portable and mobile users and offer substantial flexibility to

both end-users and service provider (Codemint, 2020). Congruently, Korowajczuk,

(2012) claims that wireless network design establishes spectrum usage policies,

deployment strategies, estimates the required number of sites, positions them, and

interconnects them. Wireless network optimization adjusts and distributes network

resources in an optimized way, targeting maximum throughput, but keeping in mind

expandability and cost. modelling; optimization; radio frequency; wireless LAN. With

the development of WLAN, construction of wireless campus network based on

WLAN technology as an extension of wired campus network, become an important

direction of development of the vocational college campus network. Wireless network

design, from the selection of equipment, covering design, safety management,

scalability and other aspects of the planning and design of the wireless campus

network, it is hoped to be useful to the construction of wireless campus network

vocational college (Shan & Yu, 2014). More so, according to Matin (2014), wireless

technologies are communication devices that use radio waves or frequency and

infrared to transmit data over the air without a physical cable. Wireless network

technology is using radio waves to transmit high-speed Internet and eliminates

unsightly cables. In furtherance, B Tech (2021) asserts that a wireless network is a

flexible data communications system, which uses wireless media such as radio

frequency technology to transmit and receive data over the air, minimizing the need

for wired connections. A wireless local area network (WLAN) links two or more

devices using some wireless distribution method (typically spread-spectrum or OFDM

7
radio), and usually providing a connection through an access point to the wider

internet. This gives users the ability to move around within a local coverage area and

still be connected to the network Musodiq, (2014) added. Y Zhao,et al, (2019) also

claims that the main task of future networks is to build, as much as possible,

intelligent networking architectures for intellectualization, activation, and

customization.

Similar with the literature and studies presented, the researchers deemed to

promote efficient and improved internet connectivity experience among the students

and the faculty and staff of Cabagan Riverside National High School by installing a

wireless network booster for the enhanced delivery of service for the school

clienteles.

8
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology of the study including the

research design and the network development model.

Research Design

This study used a quantitative research design with the work of data analysis as the

techniques/approaches for testing network was conducted. By definition, a

quantitative study “generates quantifiable numerical data” (Deakin University, 2021).

The quantifiable numerical data in this study were the speed test and the ping test

results. This research design is suited as it describes the efficiency of the installed

wireless network booster.

Network Development Model

The process of creating a network or changing an existing network is called a

life cycle. During this cycle, a new network or feature is planned, implemented, and

maintained, the process begins a new with each change.

9
Figure 1: Network Development

1. Requirements Gathering

In the first phase, researchers determined the problems in the chosen

implementation area through coordination with the principal. They identified the

specific issues with the current network and gathered information on the needs and

requirements of the users.

2. Analysis

In the second phase, researchers analyzed the solutions to the network

problems and determined the materials and equipment needed for implementation.

3. Logic Design

In this the phase, researchers developed a detailed plan on the placement of

access points using the blueprint of the school as a guide.

4. Physical Design

In the fourth phase, researchers created a physical prototype to demonstrate

the expected output of the network implementation.

5. Installation and Maintenance

In the final phase, researchers implemented the network according to the

agreed upon plan and perform regular maintenance to ensure that the network is

running smoothly. This was continued until the completion of the project to ensure

that there were no issues until the implementation was completed.

10
CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This Chapter presents the results of the data gathered based on the

techniques/Approaches for testing network.

Network Analysis

Shown in Figure 2 is the existing network setup of Cabagan Riverside

National High School (CRNHS). There are only two networks connected to the

admin, located in the Fiscal office and in the office of Senior High School

Department. Strong internet access can only be experienced within these offices

where access points have been installed and as expected, it gets weaker as the distance

becomes farther. The implemented WAP has a range of up to 15 to 20 meters,

ensuring a good networking experience. Based on the researchers’ testing, the

connection is good for about 15 meters if there is no barrier, but if there is a barrier,

such as the wall, the signal strength becomes weak. This setup can only accommodate

internet users who are close to the access point due to its limited geographical reach.

This means that not all teachers have access to this service.

11
Figure 2: Existing network setup of Cabagan Riverside National High School

Network Design

Figure 3 illustrates the offices that need internet connection. Teachers in these

offices need internet access to perform their work efficiently. Many of them have to

go near the admin to use an internet connection, which is inconvenient. The

researchers considered expanding the network to reach all areas and teachers, so that

all members of the school community can have easy access to the internet.

Figure 3: The offices that need internet connection.

To address the above mentioned problems on connectivity, the researchers

worked with the school's principal to identify areas that needed internet access and the

issues that have to be addressed. A functional network design was created by planning

and selecting the best equipment. Figure 4 shows the network plan for CRNHS. Dual-

band routers were used in the Math and Science department and as repeaters in the

English and Filipino departments, as well as in the AP/TLE department. A dual-band

12
router was also used in the library to connect the TLE laboratory as a repeater. A

point-to-point network was used in the clinic and electronic laboratory due to the

distance between these rooms which exceed the maximum range for a wired router.

This figure also shows the distance between the admin and the electronics lab, as well

as the admin and the clinic. These ranges do not work in a wired network because

wired networks must be at most 90 meters. The admin served as the connection

source for these routers and access points. Additionally, a Mikrotik was employed to

limit the bandwidth of these routers and access points to prevent network congestion,

which can slow down internet speeds for everyone.

Figure 4: Network Plan in Cabagan Riverside National High School

Network Implementation

To improve internet access at Cabagan Riverside National High School, two

different router models were chosen for implementation in the network design. The

Archer C24 Wi-Fi Router was selected for its ability to support both 2.4GHz and

13
5GHz frequency bands, providing a wider range and reducing interference from other

devices. Additionally, it has a maximum wireless speed of 433Mbps for faster internet

access and improved performance for users. The Archer C24 has 4x LAN port for

wired connections and a built-in access point mode for easy setup was used as access

point repeater. The TP-Link TL-WR820N router was also selected for its ability to

provide a strong and stable internet connection which is important for extending the

coverage area in the school. These routers have a user-friendly web interface that

allows for easy management and configuration. Both the C24 AC750 and TP-Link

TL-WR820N routers were deemed appropriate choices for improving internet access

at CRNHS due to their dual-band capability, high speed, cost efficiency and versatile

features.

14
In addition to the router models, the implementation of Cat6 outdoor UTP

cable was also considered in the network design for Cabagan Riverside National High

School. This type of cable was chosen for its ability to provide high-speed data

transmission and support for Gigabit Ethernet. The technical specifications of Cat6

outdoor UTP cable were shown in Table 2. The Cat6 outdoor UTP cable has a higher

bandwidth capacity of up to 550 MHz compared to the standard Cat5e that allows

faster data transfer. Additionally, it has a higher resistance to interference and

crosstalk which can degrade the signal quality. This cable is also made with a UV-

resistant jacket that is suitable for outdoor use and is important in providing internet

connections to different buildings and offices in the school. The use of Cat6 outdoor

UTP cable in the network design of CRNHS ensures that the wired connections have

a high-speed and reliable data transmission. This is important for devices such as

printers and servers that require a wired connection. Furthermore, the use of this cable

ensures the longevity of the network and future proofing the network infrastructure.

The Litebeam M5 is a wireless point-to-point (PTP) bridge that was used in

the network implementation to address the problem of distance between the clinic and

electronic laboratory exceeding the maximum range for a wired router. This bridge

provides a stable and reliable wireless connection between these two rooms, allowing

for seamless internet access. The technical specification of Litebeam M5 were shown

15
in Table 3. The Litebeam M5 operates on the 5GHz frequency, providing a high

throughput of 300Mbps and a long-range of up to 25km. It is equipped with a high

gain 23 dBi antenna to provide a stable and reliable connection. This device supports

the IEEE 802.11n and IEEE 802.11a wireless standards, and it can be powered using

Passive PoE. It is designed to operate in extreme temperatures, from -40 to 70° C,

making it a suitable solution for outdoor use.

In order to address the issue of limited internet access and connectivity within

the Cabagan Riverside National High School, a Mikrotik Haplite was deployed as a

solution to limit the bandwidth of the routers and access points. The technical

specification of Mikrotik Haplite was shown in Table 4. The Mikrotik Haplite is a

small and affordable router that is designed for home and small office use. It offers

advanced features such as hotspot, hotspot gateway, firewall, VPN server and more. It

is equipped with a powerful 650 MHz CPU, 64 MB RAM and a 4 port Ethernet

switch. It also offers a built-in 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n wireless access point with a

maximum output power of 27dBm. With the Mikrotik Haplite, the network

administrators can easily control and manage the bandwidth usage of the network,

preventing network congestion and ensuring a smooth and fast internet experience for

all users.

Network Testing

To ensure the network design was effective and met all requirements, the

researchers conducted thorough testing of the network infrastructure. This included

examining the LAN cable connections to understand the interactions between the

network devices and the network as a whole. Additionally, bandwidth limiting, and

congestion prevention were tested using the Mikrotik Haplite to ensure smooth

internet speeds for all users. The testing results were recorded and analyzed to identify

any areas of improvement and make necessary adjustments to the network design as

illustration below.

17
Figure 5: Network Plan at Cabagan Riverside National High School

Network Evaluation

To evaluate the network performance of the network infrastructure, the

researchers conducted a network latency test through ping and speed test. “One of the

biggest benefits of a complete monitoring system like Network Performance Monitor

is its network latency test feature, which allows the identification of areas of the

network experiencing latency and determination of how to solve the issues” (Staff

Contributor, 2019).

In addition, researchers also tested the network's throughput using Mikrotik

haplite, which was deployed to limit the bandwidth of the routers and access points to

prevent network congestion and slow down internet speeds for everyone.

Figure 6 shows that 10mbps bandwidth was installed in the Library Room and

20mbps bandwidth in the Math-Science Department where the other two routers are

connected.

18
Figure 6: Limiting the Bandwidth

To conduct the test, the researchers used a laptop connected to the Mikrotik

haplite and a router that is in Math-Science department. The router was configured to

use a 192.168.120.1 as the destination IP address and the laptop was used to send data

to the router and measure the throughput. The results of the test as shown in Figure 6,

that the network was able to handle the specified bandwidth and that the Mikrotik

haplite was effectively limiting the bandwidth as intended.

The researchers also conducted a wireless test to evaluate the performance of

the wireless network using the dual-band router TP-Link TL-WR820N. The test

showed that the router was able to provide stable and fast wireless connections for all

devices connected to the network. Overall, the network infrastructure was found to be

functioning as intended and met all the requirements set out in the design phase.

Figure 7: Ping result to 192.168.120.1

19
The network performance was evaluated by conducting a series of speed and

ping tests in various rooms throughout the CRNHS campus. As shown in the Table 5,

the results revealed that the best download and upload speeds were achieved in the

admin room, with 9.48Mbps and 12.34Mbps respectively. Math-Science Department

and AP-TLE Department also had relatively high speeds, at 7.52Mbps and 7.14Mbps

for download, and 8.23Mbps and 7.92Mbps for upload. On the other hand, the Library

and TLE Pastry Room had lower speeds, at 5.87Mbps and 4.53Mbps for download,

and 6.12Mbps and 4.97Mbps for upload respectively. The Clinic and Electronics

Office also had decent speeds, with 9.37Mbps and 8.76Mbps for download, and

9.75Mbps and 8.79Mbps for upload.

The average download and upload speeds across all rooms were 7.42Mbps and

8.19Mbps, which meets the end-user requirements to accomplish academic tasks. The

speed and ping tests were conducted at 6:00 PM, and the values show that an internet

user could access the internet beyond Google's minimum requirement outbound

signals from a participant in all situations at 3.2Mbps and Inbound signals of

2.6Mbps. This data indicates that a user connected to the internet, browsing sites such

as YouTube or Facebook, will experience a better internet connection without

interruption at any given time. Overall, the network design and implementation,

including the use of Archer C24 router, TP-Link TL-WR820N router, Litebeam M5,

Cat6 outdoor UTP cable, and Mikrotik Haplite, have effectively improved the

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the conclusions, and recommendations of this study.

Conclusion

The results of this study indicate that the design and implementation of a

wireless network in CRNHS was successful in improving the network infrastructure

and ensuring the efficiency of connection of devices within a specific area. The

following conclusions can be drawn from the study:

21
1. The design and implementation of a wireless access point in CRNHS was

successful in providing a more efficient and reliable network for the school's faculty,

staff, and students.

2. The limitation of bandwidth in the wireless access points placed in the school

helped in ensuring that the network was not overloaded, resulting in a more stable and

faster internet connection.

3. The usability and efficiency of the implemented WAP were evaluated and found to

be satisfactory, providing a better internet connection experience for the users.

4. The wireless network design in CRNHS can serve as a model for other schools

looking to improve their network infrastructure.

Recommendations

In light of the conclusions drawn from this study, the following

recommendations are made for future improvements and developments:

1. Regular monitoring and maintenance of the wireless network should be conducted

to ensure that it continues to function at optimal levels.

2. Additional wireless access points should be added in areas of the school where

internet connectivity is weak or non-existent.

22
3. The school must upgrade their internet connection plan to a higher level in order to

improve the performance of their internet connection. Even those who limit the

bandwidth of the router can be increased in order to improve the performance of the

internet connection.

4. The limitation of bandwidth should be reviewed and adjusted as necessary to

ensure that the network can accommodate the increasing number of users and devices.

5. Further studies should be conducted to evaluate the impact of the wireless network

on the school's overall productivity and learning environment.
