I played the character of Gideon Abednego Okwonko.

The writer refers to him in the drama as

Okwonko. He is an old time friend to Lejoka Brown. They fought shoulder-to-shoulder against
the long-nosed Belgians. As a flat character he continues to be a good friend to Mr.Lejoka
Brown.

To perfectly play character very well, I studied his line in the script and memorized it. I also paid
close attention to his cues and stage direction. To be in character on the drama day 2. I dressed
up in a western-style. My costume was a black suit and tie and a tucked-in shirt.

Significance Of The Character To The Subject-Matter Politics.

Okwonko advises Lejoka Brown on his politics. Mr. Lejoka Brown is running for election.
Okwonko notices that his reason for going into politics is purely greed and not patriotism.
Okwonko warns him on his election campaign strategy. Advises him that his campaign strategy
“sounds like war”(page 7). He also advises Brown that he should mind the way he speaks to his
party members. He should not order them around. These advise enable the audience to spot the
shortcomings in Brown’s race in the politics.

As a good friend to Lejoka Brown, he helped his friend to avoid bringing shame to his politics.
Leaders should be able to take control of their home issues, this proves that they can solve
national issues. The arrival of his wife Lisa could cause issues in his politics if not handled war.
It will make his enemies to call him bush pig Lejoka Brown. Okwonko helps him to hide Lisa for
a while which later fails. Okwonko Even teaches him the egg treatment(page 29).

In Lejoka Brown’s political career, Okwonko became his informant. He makes sure that his good
friend is aware of any changes that goes on in his political party. The national liberation party
chose and new candidate for the election. Okwonko informs his friend of the new changes.

To conclude one could realise that Okwonko does not have a direct significance to the subject
matter, politics. As a friend to Lejoka Brown who is deeply involved in politics, he provides his
support to him. He advises him on his campaign strategy, he helps him to avoid political shame
and informs him of his party's new candidate.
