11 Years of ATMEX
Welcome to the 11th edition of ATMEX in the iconic
bays of Huatulco, in the captivating state of Oaxaca.
This state is the ultimate expression of Mexico's
cultural and natural wealth. This diversity is re ected in
every one of its cultural expressions, including
gastronomy. Those with us this year will witness the
abundance of colors and avors that are characteristic
of this place.

Huatulco is clearly a part of this melting pot of colors,

avors, topographies, ecosystems, legends, and
people. It may present itself as a sun and beach
destination, but as we get to know the place, we
realize that the true wealth of the territory lies in the
mountains, the lagoons, and beneath the sea's surface.

According to legend, one of its secrets is that over 1500 years ago, a white man with a long
beard (thought to have been one of Christ's apostles, Saint Thomas) planted a cross a few
meters from our venue, in the Bay of Santa Cruz in Santa María Huatulco. May 3, the day of
the Holy Cross celebration, has turned Huatulco into an important site for religious
pilgrimage.

This year, we take advantage of this emblematic site to emphasize what we've called "The
Superpower of Tourism," the central theme of this edition of ATMEX. We are now more than
ever immersed in a climate crisis and emergency that is not discussed enough, and of which
we know painfully little. Ironically, Huatulco, which has always been synonymous with
environmental protection, has now become one of the visible epicenters of this global crisis.
The superpower of tourism lies in the ability to sensitize and transform the consciousness of
our customers. Through immersive experiences, we can become a factory of "planet
warriors," agents of change in their homes, o ces, neighborhoods, municipalities, and states.
No one protects what they do not love, and they do not love what they do not know. And
that's precisely where our responsibility lies: to help our customers see the impact we have
on our delicate environment. The tourism industry touches nearly 1.5 billion tourists every
year. We can be an army that changes the world.

Welcome to Atmex

I have often heard it said that without nature, there is no tourism, when in reality, WITHOUT NATURE, THERE IS
NOTHING! I am at the service of humanity and, consequently, Mother Nature. At VIVEMAR, I ful ll a part of my
mission on this Earth.

Nature provides us with profound lessons about ourselves if we are capable of observing, and even better, if we
are capable of traversing this Earth with respect, honoring life, good education, and sustainable development. It
may seem like we're talking about a utopia when we say that humans can develop in their environment e ciently
and harmoniously for all who inhabit this space.

I have always been convinced of fostering balance from the mind to manifest it in the physical world. Humans
who do not respect themselves simply cannot respect the Earth. VIVEMAR is the gateway to a new mentality, and
that is what sets us apart. We have a genuine conviction not only to conserve and protect nature but to SHAKE
PEOPLE'S MINDS who join us every day. We generate questions in search of tangible and real actions. Currently,
in addition to conserving and protecting endangered wildlife and fauna, VIVEMAR provides free environmental
education to local communities, o ering comprehensive information to help the native population grow in all
aspects. We educate the hundreds of tourists who visit us from all over the world every day, we educate the
volunteers who come from di erent countries, but, above all, we make a di erence by taking initiative, taking
action, and putting our hearts into this great mission.

OCT 20, 2023
Management and Climate Change.
10:40AM - 11:00AM
Francisco Villegas Zurita, Yubarta Ecotourism.

MSc. Francisco Villegas Zurita is the founder of the nautical tourism company Yubarta Ecoturismo,
which promotes the appreciation of the natural environment combined with pedagogical aspects
and a specialized focus on the observation and conservation of marine fauna as a tourist attraction.
He is also a Professor-Researcher at the University of the Sea. He has developed extensive
experience in the care of stranded marine mammals, as well as in the ecology and conservation of
marine mammals on the coast of Oaxaca.

In 2012, he initiated the Humpback Whale Monitoring Program for the Central American Population
on the coast of Oaxaca, which has been ongoing for 12 consecutive years and has contributed to
the establishment of local measures for use and conservation. Since 2014, he has been the
Coordinator of the Puerto Ángel team for the Whale Entanglement Response Network (RABEN). He
generated the foundational studies for the declaration of Whale Watching Areas in Puerto Ángel-
Mazunte in 2015 (MMOBIDIC) and Puerto Escondido in 2019 (UMAR). In 2018, in coordination with the
Santa María Tonameca City Council, he organized the Yubarta Ecofest tourism event for the San
Agustinillo community in Oaxaca.

He collaborates with national agencies such as SEMARNAT to train nautical tourism operators in
whale observation and with international agencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) and the International Whaling Commission (IWC), sharing information with
global research groups for the study and establishment of conservation policies for North Paci c
humpback whales.
