Page Size: Behind Bars pg. 481. Please note that these are European paper sizes, but American
sizes can translate approximately. A3 -> Tabloid, B4 -> 10x13, A4 -> Letter. Although European
ensembles will very rarely perform with A4 size parts, please remember that American
ensembles will never accept letter size parts unless they specifically ask for them. If you refer to
page 557, Gould says “Instrumental parts benefit from a slightly larger page size than A4.” Since
A4 translates to letter (8.5x11), a slight increase in size results in what is now the standard
American size for parts, 9x12 (Called “Concert” in Sibelius and Dorico).

Smaller stave sizes for chamber pieces: Behind Bars pg. 523. Also see page 515 for a useful
graphic.

Large time signatures in full score: Behind Bars pg. 519 — First sentence: “Time signatures
placed within each stave as normal are adequate under most conditions.” Translation — do not
use larger time signatures without a good reason to do so.

Stave Sharing: Behind Bars pg. 525-538
