1. Discuss the nature, goals and perspectives in/of anthropology, sociology, and political

II. Key Concepts

1. ANTHROPOLOGY – it is a social science discipline that study man in his entirely. It is


the branch of knowledge which deals with the scientific study of mankind, his works,
his body, his behaviour and values, in time and space (Palipis, 2007 p. 6). Also, it
includes man’s physical, social, and cultural development that describes and explains
the phenomenon of human life. In short, anthropology studies man and analyses his
behaviour as a member of society (Zulueta & Maglaya, 2005 p. 40).
Goals of Anthropology:
✓ Understand our biological origin
✓ Analyze our traits and our species
✓ Recognize the ways of human
✓ Understand the impact of this cultural significant to our civilization
Key Personalities
Charles Darwin – established the “Theory of Evolution”
Edward Burnett Tylor- according to him “Progression of Civilization”. He believed that
the more modernized civilization, the more higher intellectual capabilities in every
human.
Franz Boas – “Father of Modern Anthropology”
Henry Otley Beyer – “Father of Philippine Anthropology”
Perspectives in Anthropology
1. Holism – it analyzes anthropological concepts on holistic approach.
2. Cultural Relativism – it analyzes culture by relating it to other cultures.
3. Fieldwork – immersion or a need to go to area and need to discover and study
particulaar culture

2. SOCIOLOGY – it is a social science discipline that focus study on society. It is the


scientific study of patterned, shared human behaviour. It analyses human interaction
which is essential in understanding man’s cultural make-up. It may focus its attention
on all kinds of social interactions: social arts, social relationships, social organization,
social structures, and social processes (Palispis, 2009 p. 3)
Goals of Sociology
✓ Unlock social patterns thru analysis of social events, structures and changes in
the society.
✓ Understand different social behaviors.
✓ Individual behavior and its impact to the society.

• Auguste Comte – “Father of Sociology”


• Emile Durkheim – integrates empirical research to social analysis
Perspectives of Sociology
Based to Mooney, Knox & Schacht(2007)
1. Functionalist Perspectives – it analyzes the “interconnectedness, sustainability and
balance” of society
2. Conflict Perspectives – “Battle of interest and competitions”, also studying the
history not just the society
3. Symbolic Interactionist Perspectives- it emphasizes “individualism”, more deviating
the individual as members of the society.
3. POLITICAL SCIENCE – it is a social science discipline that study the nature, causes,
and consequences of collective decisions and actions taken by groups of people
embedded in cultures and institutions that structure power and authority. In other
words, it is a social science discipline that deals with systems of governance, and the
analysis of political activities, political thoughts, associated constitutions, and political
behaviour.
