Considered among the most complete Cuban pitchers of all time. Leader in
games won in National Series, with 257 and second highest strikeout in the
history of these tournaments, with 2,426.
The “skyscraper” Lazo, as he was nicknamed for his height of over 1.90
meters, remained active in Cuban baseball for almost two decades. His 90-
plus velocity and a very effective slider were his favorite pitches.
JAVIER SOTOMAYOR
They nicknamed him, rightly, the “Prince of Heights.” Javier Sotomayor is
still in possession of two of the oldest records in athletics: the 2.45 meters
outdoors, which he surpassed in 1993, in Salamanca, Spain, and the 2.43
meters indoors, achieved in Budapest. His extensive mastery of the high jump
specialty for more than a decade made him the best in the history of this
specialty.
