Introduction to the
 The Perkins® My Engine App is a free smartphone app available in

English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese to provide useful
engine data to customers. No one else offers this type of solution.
(NB: Further languages to be added over time)
 Perkins® SmartCap is a unique, low cost way of connecting with your

engine. It sends data to the Perkins® My Engine App enabling you to
manage your machines remotely via your smartphone. It’s easy to fit,
reminds you when services are due, and enables you to monitor the
operation of your machines.
Perkins® SmartCap, the only oil filler cap that tells you when to
change your oil!

Engine Registration within Perkins® My Engine App
 Perkins has built over 20 million engines worldwide
 We are actively integrating this build history into the app
 >95% of Perkins engines built after 2003 are uploaded automatically, when the owner registers the engine serial number.
 Older engines and engines with a non standard serial number format must be added manually on request.
 The app will prompt the user to contact ‘myappsupport@perkins.com’ with a pre populated email.
 Engine information is then added from our archives
 A confirmation email will be sent to the user advising they can then register their engine.
 Very low volume build lists (~<200 units ) only have build data & OMM, Consumables & Parts book information is not currently available

Caps can only be registered to one engine, however they can be flexibly moved around engines if needed.
• Caps can be uninstalled / unregistered from one application and then installed / registered upon
another, the App will then count on from the hours entered during the registration process
• Engine where a cap is removed will revert to the monthly average hours count

 If you search for a full engine serial number which is not registered in My Engine, the My
Engine Portal returns the engine but with no customer who registered the engine and
the option to Add Engine.
 Add Engine gives you the option to provide information about this engine and save it into
the My Engine Portal.

Distributor Portal - Engine service completion
 Distributor can use portal to record completed service tasks and comments to provide
service history for customers engine
 This is visible to the enduser in the My Engine app once completed

FAQ’s will also be available on Perkins.com/smartcap and Perkins.com/myengine.
How is data captured from a Perkins® SmartCap and what happens to it?
 The Perkins® My Engine app uses the phone’s Bluetooth® capability to scan for nearby Perkins® SmartCaps approximately every 15 seconds. If a message is captured, it is
immediately given a date-timestamp. Every 30 minutes this data is synchronized to the Perkins cloud so that it may be used by the engine owner to view their data within the app.
What data is sent to the cloud?

 Each Perkins® SmartCap will send it’s unique identity, engine hours and battery level to the cloud for use by engine owner in the Perkins® My Engine app. Additionally, the location
of the message detection is sent to provide the engine map location feature.
Does the Perkins® My Engine app only scan and send data to the cloud for my Perkins® SmartCap?
 No. The app may scan and send data to the cloud for any Perkins® SmartCap in the community. This is to benefit engine owners by providing the latest possible update to their
information in the app.
Will the app scan for Perkins® SmartCaps and send data to the cloud when a user is not logged in?
 No. A registered app user must be logged on for the Bluetooth® scan and send to cloud process to operate. If a user logs out or fully closes the app, the process is stopped. When
a user reopens the app, the process starts again.
Do I need to give permission for the app to use Location Services and Bluetooth®?
 If you want to use all app features, including Perkins® SmartCap, both must be granted permission and turned on. You’ll be prompted to do so when using the app.
 If you deny permission to these services, you may need to update the app settings in the phone menu.
 If you deny permission and select to “Stop asking”, you’ll have to grant permission from the phone settings menu.
 If in doubt, remove the app from the phone and install again from Google Play or Apple App Store.

Customer FAQ’s (ii)
On Apple iOS devices, should I select to “Always Allow” access to my location when prompted?
 Yes. For the Perkins® SmartCap scan and cloud synchronization process to work, “Always Allow” should be selected.
 If “Only While Using the App” is selected, no background activity will happen.
 If “Don’t Allow” is selected, the app will not function correctly.
 If in doubt, remove the app from the phone and install again from the Apple App Store.
Why does the app ask permission to make and manage phone calls?
 The app doesn’t make or manage phone calls. This permission is required by the app to read the ApplicationID from the phone. The ID is used when sending Perkins® SmartCap
messages to the cloud to uniquely and anonymously record the source without using any personal information.
How often will I have to log into the Perkins® My Engine app?
 If you use the Perkins® My Engine app within a month, your logon will stay alive. You do not need to keep the app open or in the background to keep the logon alive on a given
phone. If you use the app on multiple phones then you would need to use each within a month to keep each logon alive.
Does the Perkins® My Engine app still find Perkins® SmartCaps if it’s minimised or the phone is locked?
 The app will continue to scan for nearby Perkins® SmartCaps but a degraded performance is likely. Due to the way most phone operating systems preserve battery life, the scan
and cloud synchronization process will happen less frequently. This varies between devices. The likelihood of finding a cap is greatly reduced, so manual scans initiated from
within the app are recommended if you wish to ensure updates.

Customer FAQ’s (iii)
What does the Engine Details->Perkins® SmartCap->Last synchronized field tell me?
 Every Perkins® SmartCap message received by the app is immediately given a date-timestamp. Once the data
has been sent to the cloud, this will display in the engine details page to inform the owner of exactly when the
data was captured from the cap.
What does the My Engine->Last synchronized field on the app home screen tell me?
 Every time the app on your phone sends captured Perkins® SmartCap data to the cloud, this date-timestamp is
updated. It is not necessarily the date-timestamp of when the actual data was captured.
What should I do if my phone doesn’t appear to be scanning and or cloud synchronizing?

 On the home screen of the app you will see a blue status bar that may also be pressed to perform a manual
scan. If this isn’t updating with a new value periodically, check to ensure that Bluetooth® and Location Services
are turned on, then restart the app. Sometimes a phone restart is required to refresh the Bluetooth® services. If
your engine details aren’t updating then we recommend that you manually press the “Scan SmartCap” button
when near the cap.
Will Apple iOS Low Power Mode affect the app?

 Yes. If you enable this mode the Perkins® SmartCap scan and cloud synchronization process will be degraded
or stop entirely.

Will Android Power Saving Mode affect the app?
 Yes. If you enable this mode the Perkins® SmartCap scan and cloud synchronization process will be degraded or stop
entirely.
Will Android Data Saver Mode affect the app?

 Yes. Data saver will block or limit background and foreground data usage, degrading the Perkins® SmartCap scan and
cloud synchronization process. If you toggle the phone setting for the Perkins® My Engine app, Allow unrestricted data
usage, you allow the app to operate normally whilst still using Data Saver mode. This setting may be found in the Apps
menu, within My Engine, Mobile data.
Should I enable the Android app setting Allow background data usage?
 Yes, although it should be on by default. This will allow the app to complete cloud synchronization of Perkins® SmartCap
data when not in the foreground. This setting may be found in the Apps menu, within My Engine, Mobile data.
How long should I wait until I see my engine details updated from a Perkins® SmartCap scan?
 The time between a synchronization to cloud and an update to your engine details varies between 5 and 15 minutes
depending on demand.
Do I have to leave my Bluetooth® and Location Services switched on for the app to work?
 Yes. If you want to benefit from the Perkins® SmartCap features, both Location Services and Bluetooth® must be enabled.

Can I move a Perkins® SmartCap from one engine to another?
 Yes. Just make sure to unregister the cap from the engine before moving it to the next. Once registered to an engine, any recorded running hours will be captured against that
engine. Unregistering it and adding a new Perkins® SmartCap will continue the process, whether the new cap has been used before or not.
What happens if I remove my Perkins® SmartCap?

 If you remove the Perkins® SmartCap from the engine, make sure to unregister it as soon as possible. If you decide not to replace the cap with another, the engine hours in the
app will continue to increment each month by the Average hours/month entered in the engine details. If a new Perkins® SmartCap is added, Average hours/month is no longer
added.
If I’m using a Perkins® SmartCap, can I adjust my engine hours when I want?
 Yes. You may edit your engine details at any time, adjusting the recorded hours as required.
How should I dispose of my Perkins® SmartCap?

 Each Perkins® SmartCap contains a Lithium Ion battery and must be disposed of accordingly.
