Note:
Pattern is worked in the round. Place a stitch marker
into the first stitch of each round or leave a long tail
in the beginning and use it as a stitch marker by
laying it after the last stitch of the previous round
(if necessary).
Body
1. Ch 2, 2 dc in next, *sk 2sts, 3 dc in next* repeat to end of round, join.
2. Ch 2, sk 2sts, *3 dc in space from previous round, between shells, sk 2sts* repeat to end of round,
2 dc, join.

3. Repeat round 1
4. Repeat round 2. For newborn size, skip to “band”.
5. Repeat round 1. For toddler – preteen size, skip to “band”.
6. For teen/adult size, repeat round 2.
Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. Caution: this will affect the size of the hat. Be careful not to crochet
too tightly. Continue to sc for the amount of rounds for desired size. (Note: amount of rounds includes
this initial sc round)
Brim
Instructions are written with counts shown as follows: newborn – 18mths (toddler, teen/adult)
Place a marker, such as a scrap piece of yarn or safety pin, in current st.
Using a J hook, sl st in the next 22 (25, 29) sts. Turn.
Ch 1, (working over previous sl st row for extra strength) sc 9 (11, 11), 2sc in next st, sc, 2sc in
next st, sc across to end. 24 (27, 31) sts. Turn.
Ch 1, sl st in each stitch across. Turn.
Ch 1, sk first st, (working over previous sl st row) sc, to center, 2sc in center st, sc across to last
two sts, sc2tog. 23 (26, 30) sts. Turn.
Ch 1, sc 9 (10, 12), 2sc in next st, sc 3, 2sc in next st, sc across to end. 25 (28, 32). Turn.
*Ch 1, sk first st, sc in each st across to last 2 sc, sc dec, turn.*
Repeat from * to * 2 (3, 5) MORE times. Finish off.
Attach yarn to center back of hat and sc around entire bottom edge, pulling snug at corners of
brim and across brim. Be careful NOT to pull tightly across the rest of the hat or it will affect
hat size.
Flowers
Materials: Small amounts of yarn in various colors for flowers
Size J hook, or choice of size for larger or smaller flowers
Yarn needle
Large flower: Using a J hook and yarn, ch 5 and join to form a
circle (or do a magic loop of 5). Pull snug to close hole.
1. 2 hdc in each st, sl st to first sc (10 sts).
2. In first st, *Ch 2, dc, 2 trc, dc, ch 2, then sl st in next st*.
Repeat until 5 petals are made. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Small flower: Same as “large flower”, except with a size H hook.

Place large flower on hat, where desired, with smaller flower on top. Sew in place.
Clip option: if you do not want to sew the flower to the hat, slip an alligator clip through the back
of the flower instead.

I prefer to make hats approx 1” smaller than the head circumference so they will stretch and not be too big.
Note: All measurements are approximate and based on “average” head sizes according to several online
sources. Hat “height” is the measurement from top of crown to bottom edge.
