2) Rheumatoid arthritis

Osteoarthritis

The most common type of arthritis,

osteoarthritis involves wear-and-tear
damage to your joint's cartilage the hard,
slick coating on the ends of bones where
they form a joint.

6
NO OBJECTIVE LERNING
ACTIVITY
Cartilage cushions the ends of the bones and
allows nearly frictionless joint motion, but
enough damage can result in bone grinding
directly on bone, which causes pain and
restricted movement.

Osteoarthritis also affects the entire joint. It

causes changes in the bones and
deterioration of the connective tissues that
attach muscle to bone and hold the joint
together. It also causes inflammation of the
joint lining.

Rheumatoid arthritis

In rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune

system attacks the lining of the joint capsule,
a tough membrane that encloses all the joint
parts. This lining becomes inflamed and
swollen. The disease process can eventually
destroy cartilage and bone within the joint.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

 Stiffness when you wake up or after

you’ve been sitting for a while
 Tenderness the area is sore when you
touch it
 Lack of movement -the joint won’t
complete its full range of motion
 Grating - you might feel things
rubbing together inside the joint
 Bone spurs -- lumps of bone form
around the joint
 Joint pain

Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

 joint pain, swelling and tenderness for

6 weeks or longer

MEDICATION

both pain and inflammation.
Ibuprofen
 Corticosteroids: Reduce
inflammation and suppress the
immune system.
 Triamcinolone .
Methylprednisolone

drugs (DMARDs): The most

PROCEDURE

Joint repair
Joint surfaces are smoothed or realigned,
often performed arthroscopically

Joint replacement surgery: Damaged

joints are removed and replaced with an
artificial joint.

Arthrodesis: Removes ends of the two

bones in the joint that are fused together
until they heal into one rigid unit.

Eat fish students are learn
actively.
Certain fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids,
a healthy polyunsaturated fat. Omega-3s
have a number of health benefits, and they
can reduce inflammation in the body.

Control your weight

Your knees have to support your body

weight. Being overweight or obese can take
a real toll on them.

17
SR TIME SPECIFIC CONTENT TEACHING AV AIDS EVALUATION
NO OBJECTIVE LERNING
ACTIVITY
Exercise

Exercise not only takes the stress of excess

weight off your joints, but also strengthens
the muscles around the joints. This stabilizes
them and can protect them from added wear
and tear.

Avoid injury

Over time, your joints can start to wear out.

But when you injure your joints — for
example, while playing sports or due to an
accident — you can damage the cartilage
and cause it to wear out more quickly.

Protect joint

Using the right techniques when sitting,

working, and lifting can help protect joints
from everyday strains. For example, lift with
your knees and hips — not your back —

when picking up objects.
