TEST RUN REPORT

EXPERIMENT NO. : 1

EXPERIMENT TITLE: EXPERIMENT 1 – DETERMINATION OF THE FORMULA

UNIT OF A COMPOUND
PROBLEM: -

SUGGESTION: Use 15ml of HCl at once to dissolve the Zinc powder.

DATA:

1. i. Mass of empty crucible + lid = 59.185 g

ii. Mass of crucible + Zinc powder = 59.440 g
iii. Mass of Zinc powder = 0.255 g

2. Mass of crucible + Zinc Chloride

First heating = 59.697 g
Second heating = 59.695 g
Third heating (Mass of final weight) = -g

3. i. Mass of Zinc Chloride = 0.51 g [Mass of final weight – (Mass of empty crucible+lid)]
ii. Mass of Chlorine = 0.255 g (Mass of final weight Zinc Chloride– mass of zinc powder)

Element Zn Cl
Mass/ g 0.255 0.255
0.255/65.4 0.255/35.5
Number of moles = 3.9 x 10-3 = 7.183 x 10-3
3.9 x 10-3 7.183 x 10-3
Simplest ratio 3.9 x 10-3 3.9 x 10-3
=1 = 1.84 ≈ 2

NOTE / PRECAUTION / COMMENT / REMINDER :

1. Hydrochloric acid must be added slowly to avoid forming bubbles.
2. Use the same balance when weighing.
3. Heat the compound slowly to avoid splattering (Temperature of hot plate : 4-5 )
4. Avoid overheating to prevent decomposition of ZnCl2 and some of product lost due to
sublimation.
5. Cooling must be carried out rapidly with crucible lid to avoid absorption of moisture.
