CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Introduction

Real life project is a module that helps learners to improve on their skills by putting the
knowledge they have acquired into practice through producing and selling an item.
The real life project has enhanced me to complete the requirements for the award of my national
diploma in civil and building engineering.
1.2 Background
This project was chosen carefully after looking at how the students and communities demand for
accommodation. As a national diploma students, I needed to improve on my abilities and check
on my level of understanding as far as this course unit is concern. I had to choose to construct
this structure in St. Mary’s hospital Lacor.
I got motivated in this project among many to meet the high demand of staff houses.
1.3 Problem statement.
The problem identified was lack of accommodation for medical personnel.
1.4 Objectives
 To overcome lack of accommodation.
 To learn how to invest and maintain a business.
 To improve on my customer care services.
 To improve on my practical skills like communication and marketing skills example,
explaining my products to customers.
 To help me become self employed.
 To gain experience in the field of business
1.5 Significance of the project.
 The project is to create a strong bond between the institute, and the surrounding
communities since they are the targeted customers.
 The project is to be a source of income to support us as students.
 The project is to motivate more people to join our college since they will be admiring the
work and feel like they should do the same.

CHAPTER TWO
2.1 Methodology
Intensive site investigation was done through site visit and observation where findings show that
there is need for construction of staff quarters and staffs sometimes feel inconvenience due to
inadequate structures for staffs at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor.
2.2 Methods
Manual method
Procedures;

 Setting out using 3-4-5 and engineering square method


 Demarcation of the line for the foundation trenches.
 Excavation of the foundation trenches.
 Taking levels for the foundation base.
 Batching of the materials that is to say cement, sand and coarse aggregate to the
required amount of 1;3;6.
 Hand mixing of the materials.
 Transportation and casting the foundation base.
 Setting and laying of foundation wall.
 Back filling of the foundation.

NB: I use the tools and equipment for the institute hence no budget put for it.

CHAPTER FOUR
4.1 Limitations
 Sometimes the equipments are on use by the institute making it hard to produce on time.
 Transport has to be included yet it wasn’t budgeted for hence extra cost.
 Limited funds to enable me to do other decoration.

4.2 Recommendation
 Many students can enter the project to gain skills and knowledge.
 Early preparation and consultation about equipments can be done to avoid delay in
painting.
 The institute can acquire more tools and equipments for painting works.

4.3 Source of fund


I got the funding and support from the institute sponsored all production process. I am really
blessed to have the administrator with noble character and a heart for supporting and seeing that
their students excel in practical skills.

4.4 Conclusion
The project was quite simple to execute and so motivating. I became so encourage the way the
project was selling itself, the Institute were very excited and I hope to do more in another course
unit.
