Plant Structure
All plants have a particular structure that helps it survive. The structure of flowering plants is important to its
life cycle and reproductive system. Each part of the plant has a specific job to do. From down into the dirt to high up in the
sky, each part of the plant is working hard.
First, the roots of a plant are probably the most important part of the plant. The roots dig down deep into the
soil. This is like the anchor of a ship. It keeps the plant in place. It also has an important function. The roots absorb water
and nutrients from the soil. This helps to feed the plant. The roots slowly move and grow towards the nutrient rich soil.
The stem shoots up through the soil from the roots. The stem also has several different functions. The stem
provides support for the plant by holding it straight. The stem also provides support for the flowers and leaves. The
leaves have another function. The leaves synthesize food through a process known as photosynthesis. They absorb sunlight
and turn the sun’s energy into food. The nutrients from the root and leaves travel throughout the stem.
Finally, the flowers at the top of the plant are boldly different than the rest of the plant. The function of the
flower is to attract pollinators and produce seeds so that the plant can reproduce. Flowers are brightly colored to
attract specific types of pollinators. These flowers secrete fragrances that can be picked up for miles. The scents
attract pollinators. Without pollinators, the plants may not be able to reproduce. Inside of the flower are tiny eggs. Once
the eggs are fertilized, seeds will be produced within the flower. The seeds will then be deposited to create new plants.
Each part of a plant has an important function. The roots anchor the plant into the soil and absorb nutrients.
The stem provides support to the leaves and flower. The leaves absorb sunlight. The flower produces seeds. Each part of
the flower is important to its life cycle.
