Literature Review

According to Compareremit (2020), an overseas Filipino is a term used to

refer to a person of a Filipino origin who p outside the Philippines. This term applies

to Filipinos who are abroad as permanent residents in a different country as well as

to those who are abroad for a limited period for employment or education.

Based on the study “Children of Overseas Filipino Workers and Their

Academic Performance” conducted by Irene Pajarillo-Aquino (2019), overseas

Filipino Workers (OFWS) choose to work abroad for various reasons. Some are

attracted by The improved economic and political conditions in other countries, while

others have limited options and see no alternative.

As cited in Edubirdie (2002), Filipino citizens are migrating to other country for

working purposes. Working overseas can have consequences for the children who

remain at home. While parents may dream of obtaining high paying jobs to benefits

their families, they may not realize the potential challenges that come with being far

away from their children.

Fassler (2005), eonclude that the separation of children from their parents can

have a negative impact on their academic performance, leading to a decline

classroom performance. The constant worry about their parents’ well-being and

uncertainly surrounding their situation can create additional distractions, further

hindering their ability to focus on their education.

In the absence of parents, cellular phones and computers have become the

replacement for personal parenting, but they cannot fully replace the emotional

connection that develops when parents are physically present. At the same time,

they will miss the growing up years of their children and their value formation.

(Amoguis, A.T., Aguana, A.A., & Lantaca, W.F, (2023)

According to Zhao et al (2018), children who are separated from their parents

for extended periods of time often faced difficulties in their emotional well-being.

These left behind children often experience feeling of loneliness and sadness, as

they long for the presence and support of their parents.

According to Minda (2017), migrations of the parents have a lot of effects on

those children left behind. It affects the child emotional aspect, social aspect and the

perception in the life of the child. These children are vulnerable to lots of problems

and also becoming self-doubting because of the lack of attention from parents

However, Lui, Sun, Zhang, Wang and Guo (2010), states that growing up

outside the parental environment, the absent migrant-parents’ children could not

discuss their thoughts, their situation, or their problems with their parents. They

experience an insecure relationship with their parents, which leads to a diminished
