He was born in Russia, Dut forthe last 25 years of his life he was based in the USA. Before his departure from his native country, he wrote several sets of songs for voice and piano to Russian words. But the last of his 14 Songs, Op. 34, published in 1812, is Vocalise, or song without words. Rachmaninoff later arranged it for soprano and orchestra and for orchestra alone; and many other arrangers, attracted by its long, winding. modal melody over subtly shifting harmonies, have made versions for different solo instruments, including the violin.
