Lanao Del Norte
History
● Lanao is derived from the Maranao word “Ranao” meaning a body of water
● Created in 1914 under the jurisdiction of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu.
● It was split into Del Norte and Del Sur pursuant to the provisions of Republic Act No.
2228.
● Iligan City was capital of Lanao Del Norte until 1977 when it was moved to Tubod issued
by then President Ferdinand Marcos.
● Pagana Maranao
- Traditional Maranao feast that fosters peace and unity.
● Dapit Alim
- Dapit Alim, which means "healing place", is a religious sanctuary in Tubod. Founded by
Fr. Dong Galenzoga of the Kahigalaan ni Hesus.
● Festivals
- The Province of Lanao del Norte is home to a number of festivals to which the people
freely practice.
● Sinuglaw
- Sinuglaw is a marriage of two totally distinct dishes; the Sinugba which is grilled meat
and Kinilaw which is fish soaked in citric acid or vinegar.
● Turrones de Mani
- One of the most common sweet treats sold in all pasalubong centers. It is a
honey-centered wafer wrapped with caramelized sugar and crushed peanuts.

● Linamon Beach
- Located in the eastern gateway to Lanao Del Norte. It is found at Linamon and
considered as the “Beach Capital of Lanao del Norte”.
● Limunsudan Falls
- A two-layered falls with a collective height of 870 feet, making it one of the highest
waterfalls in the Philippines.
● Mount Agad-Agad
- Mt Agad-Agad rises to more than 1,600 feet, making it one of the highest points in the
Iligan area.

● Misamis is derived from the Subanen word “Kuyamis” which is a variety of coconut
● On November 2, 1929 the Philippine Act No. 3537 signed into law dividing the Misamis
Province into two, creating Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental

● Bawbawon Island
- An island located less than a kilometer off the shores of Plaridel
- got its name from the shallow water around it, whereas in the local dialect “shallow”
means “bawbawon” or “baobaoan”.
● Fuerte dela Concepcion y del Triunfo
- A citadel first built by Spanish Jesuit priest and commander José Ducos as a Spanish
fortress in the old town of Misamis in the island of Mindanao. An important historical
landmark that symbolizes the city's cultural heritage.
● Caluya Shrine
- Located in Sapang Dalaga, Misamis Occidental. It is one of the tourist attractions in the
province. There's a 45-feet high, huge statue of Jesus Christ, which is known as Christ the
Redeemer, standing up on top of a hill.
