History

● Lanao is derived from the Maranao word “Ranao” meaning a body of water
● Created in 1914 under the jurisdiction of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu.
● It was split into Del Norte and Del Sur pursuant to the provisions of Republic Act No.
2228.
● Iligan City was capital of Lanao Del Norte until 1977 when it was moved to Tubod issued
by then President Ferdinand Marcos.

● City of Majestic Waterfalls
- Iligan City alone has over 20 waterfalls, earning this nickname.

● Pagana Maranao
- Traditional Maranao feast that fosters peace and unity.

● Dapit Alim
- Dapit Alim, which means "healing place", is a religious sanctuary in Tubod. Founded by
Fr. Dong Galenzoga of the Kahigalaan ni Hesus.

● Festivals
- The Province of Lanao del Norte is home to a number of festivals to which the people
freely practice.

● Alimango Festival - a colorful and fascinating celebration in the town of Lala in


the province of Lanao del Norte which is also the top producer of this of
alimango (crab) in Lanao del Norte.

● Kinhason Festival - featuring the abundance of fish and various seashells in


honor of their patron saint Sto. Nino and Local Tourism Month which is held
every 16th of January.
● Hugyaw sa Kadagatan Festival - A thanksgiving for the blessings and bounty
during fish expeditions and fish farming of the locals, they celebrate it every
April 25. One of the unique festivals in the Philippines as cultural dancers
showcase their artistry and balance while performing on board the fabricated
bamboo raft called “gakit“.

● Binakin
- A steamed corn tamales are made by a heavenly mix of corn, milk, butter, baking powder,
and sugar all wrapped in corn husks then steamed.

● Sinuglaw
- Sinuglaw is a marriage of two totally distinct dishes; the Sinugba which is grilled meat
and Kinilaw which is fish soaked in citric acid or vinegar.

● Turrones de Mani
- One of the most common sweet treats sold in all pasalubong centers. It is a
honey-centered wafer wrapped with caramelized sugar and crushed peanuts.

● Buko pie sa Linamon


- Lanao del Norte has been getting the attention of foodies and tourists all over because of
their very own version of the Filipino buko pie. With its crispy, buttery, and flaky crust
that is complemented by their unforgettable creamy-sweet soft coconut filling.

● Pikalawag Public Beach


- A beach located in the town of Sultan Naga Dimaporo, well-known for its startling fine
sand and rich, untouched underwater ecosystem.

● Linamon Beach
- Located in the eastern gateway to Lanao Del Norte. It is found at Linamon and
considered as the “Beach Capital of Lanao del Norte”.

● Limunsudan Falls
- A two-layered falls with a collective height of 870 feet, making it one of the highest
waterfalls in the Philippines.

● Mount Agad-Agad
- Mt Agad-Agad rises to more than 1,600 feet, making it one of the highest points in the
Iligan area.
Misamis Occidental
Christmas Capital of Mindanao
● City of Oroquieta is the capital city
● has 14 municipalities and 3 cities with a total number of 490 barangays.
● as of the 2020 Census, the Misamis Occidental has a population of 617,333
● Area of 2,006.63 square kilometers.
● “Subanen,” the dialect of the province but most residents are Cebuano-speaking and can
speak Tagalog and English.
● known for beautiful waters, bountiful fish and seafood.

History
● Misamis is derived from the Subanen word “Kuyamis” which is a variety of coconut
● On November 2, 1929 the Philippine Act No. 3537 signed into law dividing the Misamis
Province into two, creating Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental

● Old Churches and Ancient Architecture
- Immaculate Conception Cathedral
➢ one of the five cathedrals within the Roman Catholic Ecclesiastical Province of
Ozamiz.
➢ designed by Filipino architect Leandro Locsin and was completed in 1960.
➢ renovated in 1997-1998 including the newly installed façade which earned both
praise and criticism.
- St. John the Baptist Church in Jimenez
➢ one of the oldest churches in the Philippines.
➢ one of the nine original towns of Misamis Occidental.
➢ the paintings on the ceiling are one of the central attractions
➢ The National Historical Institute (NHI) declared it as National Cultural Heritage.
- Fuerte De La Concepcion Y Del Triunfo
➢ Declared as a historical landmark
➢ built in 1756 by Jesuit Fr. Jose Ducos as defense against marauding Muslim
pirates. Located in Ozamiz City.
➢ Shrine of the Nuestra Señora de la Conception del Triunfo (Our Lady of
Triumph) can be found outside of the waal that grows over time.
● Festivals
- Binalbal Festival
➢ an annual festival held on the first of January in Tudela, Misamis Occidental,
Philippines . It is a unique celebration of welcoming the new year for the
townsfolk of Tudela.

- Dalit Festival “offering,”


➢ located in Tangub City, It is the city’s simple way of saying “Mabuhay and
Welcome to Tangub,”
➢ celebrates the feast of Saint Michael, the Archangel every 29th of September.
- Harvest Festival
➢ Showcases the products of the Techno-Demo Farm at Mantic, with different
kinds of melons and watermelons promoted and sold. Other agricultural farm
products promoted are sasso chicken (native chicken), goats, and swine.
- Inug-og Festival
➢ Located in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental, Mindanao during October 15
held in honor of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.
- Subayen Keg Subanon
➢ Located in Ozamiz City, a week-long festivity marking the feast of Nuestra
Señora del Triunfo dela Cruz (Our Lady of Triumph).

● Ngo Hiong
- An adaptation of the Chinese spring rolls or a variety of the lumpia.
- A famous place you can visit to have NgoHiong is the Shanghai Noodle House in
Jimenez, Misamis Occidental.
● Halang Halang
- Which literally translates to spicy-spicy, is first known as a Visayan dish. It’s a spicy
chicken dish made with coconut milk and chilis.
● Sasing Kinilaw
- A raw dish made out of sassing or peanut worm marinated with vinegar and seasonings.
● Sikwate
- The Filipino version of hot chocolate, a pure chocolate.
- The process of making this is challenging using a “batirol”

● Bawbawon Island
- An island located less than a kilometer off the shores of Plaridel
- got its name from the shallow water around it, whereas in the local dialect “shallow”
means “bawbawon” or “baobaoan”.
● Fuerte dela Concepcion y del Triunfo
- A citadel first built by Spanish Jesuit priest and commander José Ducos as a Spanish
fortress in the old town of Misamis in the island of Mindanao. An important historical
landmark that symbolizes the city's cultural heritage.
● Caluya Shrine
- Located in Sapang Dalaga, Misamis Occidental. It is one of the tourist attractions in the
province. There's a 45-feet high, huge statue of Jesus Christ, which is known as Christ the
Redeemer, standing up on top of a hill.
