1. Warm up
10 mins.
This stage is for students to think about meeting people for the first time. They read the different points and
discuss which ones they think are important. First go through each point, concept-checking any unknown words.
Then ask them individually to choose the most important three. Then put the students in groups of three or four
and ask them to compare their answers. During feedback, see if there are common ideas for the top three.
2. Vocabulary
5 mins.
This stage is to pre-teach some key vocabulary in the text. First, ask the students to match the two halves to
complete the definitions. Practise pronunciation during the feedback.
1. → a. 2. → d. 3. → b. 4. → c.
10-15 mins.
This stage is for students to develop their listening for gist and detail skills. Tell the students they are going to
listen to people meeting for the first time. Show the students the two gist questions and then play the audio.
Check the answers. Then show them the comprehension questions and elicit what kind of information they are
listening for (names, jobs, places). After playing the audio one time, ask the students to check their answers with
their partners. Then play it again if necessary. Check the answers.
5 mins.
Instructions in the previous section.
10 mins.
This stage is for students to identify keywords to complete the sentences used for greetings and introductions. Ask
the students to read the sentences from the audio and fill in the gaps with an appropriate word. Then, ask them
to compare their answers in pairs. Then play the audio again so they can check their answers. During feedback,
elicit the contraction for "I am". Then practise the pronunciation of each sentence. Students then personalise the
