When I offered to write a piece for Wes for his senior recital, he asked me if T would write a multiple percussion solo for him, Playing Latin rhythms on the drum set is something I really enjoy. So I thought: Why not write a multiple percussion solo based on Afro-Cuban and samba rhythms? Throughout Latin Journey, several different Afro-Cuban and samba grooves are played. After each groove is established, there is a section that is more soloistic. The solo sections are similar to those I would play on drum set for each of these Latin grooves. The solo sections also incorporate ideas that Latin percussion players would play in their solos.
