The Hunter and the Pigeon
There was a large tree on the bank of the Godavari river. Many birds would
rest in that tree,
One day, a clever hunter wanted to catch some birds. He spread a net below
the tree and covered it with sand, He spread some grains of rice on it. Then, he
hid himself behind the tree.
A flock of pigeons were flying over the tree in search of food. They saw the
grains strewn on the ground and flew down to peck and eat.
‘As soon as the pigeons were on the ground, they were trapped in the net.
One by one, the pigeons tried to get free and fly away but they could not escape.
They were very sad.
Then, their leader had a plan. ‘Let us all fly &
together at the same time,’ he said to the group }
wisely.
All the pigeons now flapped their wings together, as hard as they could.
Soon, they began to rise. Before the hunter could catch them, they flew away
with the net.
whe) The hunter chased them but the birds flew
=f bi high up and away. When the pigeons had
flown some distance, they asked their
leader, ‘How do we free ourselves from the
net?”\|
‘Do not worry. My friends, the Mouse, lives on a hill nearby. We will go to him
for help!
They all flew to the hill. The leader of the pigeons then called out to his
friend, ‘My friend, we are in trouble. Please come and set us free.’
The Mouse came out of his hole and nibbled on the net and set the birds
free. The pigeons thanked him and flew away.

Mithu Plants a Tree
Every year, Mithu plants a tree in his garden. Mithu’s grandparents have
told him that trees are precious. They give us shade and fresh air. They give us
flowers and fruits to eat.
This year too Mithu is planting a small tree. He has chosen a hibiscus plant.
‘Look how tiny the baby leaves are, Grandma,’ Mithu said happily.
‘Yes, Mithu. This sapling will soon grow big and strong. Then you will see lovely
red hibiscus flowers blooming,’ said Grandma.
‘Oh, I can’t wait to see them,’ said Mithu, clapping his hands. ‘Thank you,
Grandma, for giving me this lovely plant.’
‘You are welcome, Mithu! But to see
the flowers, you must first look after the
plant well, said Grandma.
Grandma dug a hole in a large pot,
full of soil. Then, Mithu placed the apling
in the hole. Carefully, he pressed the
loose soil around its roots to keep it
upright. Then, Grandma and Mithu
watered it.
‘Do not forget to water the plant
daily, Mithu. If you forget, it will die,’ Said
Grandma.
‘Don't worry, Grandma. I will water the plant every day. I want to see the
bright red flowers soon,’ said Mithu with a smile.
