,/hile drilling a veil near a to rn, some workmen

hit upon a big cave. Descending into it, they discover,

among other relics of the Piddle Ages, a very rueer-

looking, veil-preserved statue made of clay.

Old Aaron, the antiruity delaer, buys the rhole

treasure. His beautiful daughter Lydia admires the relic

and is particularly pleased "4th the big clumsy dayman

that has been placed in a corner of the room.

Lydia is very much in love rith a youn~ count

One of Aaron's neighbors is an old professor,

of his beloved treasures. -iaron is at first not at all
anxious to buy the book, but men he finds in it a picture
of the dayman he had recently purchased, he finally agrees
to take the folio.
Th- professor leaves the shop, and Aaron reads

Aaron’s curiosity is now aroused. He cannot doubt

his fears are dispelled, and he finally decides to use the
"GOLHM"
as his servant. The

nary strength, hut Aaron fully controls it, aid can instantly
make it lifeless by simply re mo v in / the oHal-IU.
Aaron is planning to go out o 7 to m, and Lydia
.gos to meet her lov r. The count comes, hut is disap-
pointed this time, for the old dealer has not gone. ills
sweetheart makes her father believe that he is a customer
lien he enters the shop. The count hands her a note, but
Lydia is not cuick enough: her father sees it and demands
an explanation after the customer's departure. Ljrdia
stubbornly refuses to explain.
Her disobedience and her frivolity anger her
father, who decides to make the "Golem" her permanent guard,
Lydia's fears are of no avail to her; the "Golem" is or-
dered to watch her closely, and old Aaron goes calmly about
his busimflSLf * r~ I
The count is awaiting his sweetheart for a garden-
party at his aousi, and Lydia is intent on escaping, h r e d s

servant brings ner a costume for the party, but the ’’Golem"

frightens him so that he runs away. Lydia goes to her room
to try 01 costume, hut toe "Golem-' folloi/s her and

carries her hack to the shop. How she attempts to soften


the "Golem’s" heart by trying her charms on him. The
"IHSTIHGT OF LOVE"
is awakened in the half-human creature; it tries to over-
power Lydia, who unknowingly loosens the "Shenn". It drops
out, and immediately the "Golem" topples over lifeless.
Lydia is free and she hurries to the fancy-dress-party at
Fred’s house.
doon afterwards the old professor returns to the
, ,00 to look at one of the books he sold to Aaron, he sees
tie "Golem” lying on the floor, the "Ghenn" at its side,
uelumbering the old tale, he replaces the ,fGhenn" in the

cavity; the "Golem" jumps up, pushes the old man aside, and
rushes ou to the street rith only one thought;
THERE Id THE GIRL?

The "Golem" follows Lydia through the moon-lit


streetsaand lanes until it reaches the count's castle. The
ball is in full swing as it enters; but Lydia sees it and
.warns the guests. The count shoots at it, the servant
stabs it it, but the "Golem" lives; it is invulnerable. A
wild panic breaks out and everyone flees. The "Golem" pur-
sues the count and his s reetheart up to the roof of a nearby

her. Thy "Gol^m" turns to its aggressor and is
