Characterisation Paragraph

Characterisation is the way characters in a book or film are presented to us

to understand key ideas and how characters can change the way the book is
understood and interpreted.Lois Lowry uses characterisation to give the
reader an understanding of characters and how these characters are a
representation of our society and ‘The Givers’ society and how we can relate
to certain characters making them more or less likeable. Jonas in the giver
has many different characteristics that link into characterisation but one of
his biggest characteristics is how he is different. “He had never, within his
memory, been tempted to lie. Asher did not lie. Lily did not lie. His parents
did not lie. No one did. Unless… Now Jonas had a thought that he had never
had before. This thought was frightening. What if others—adults—had, upon
becoming Twelves, received in their instructions the same terrifying
sentence? What if they had all been instructed: You may lie?” What this
quotes states is that know one of his friends or family had never lied this
makes him different because he is one of only the few people that can tell a
lie in the givers society. Jonas is also a very special character. Jonas is
special because when he was at the ceremony of twelve the chief elder was
going around and giving them there jobs but once he got to Joans he was
skipped. The chief elder came back to him at the end and said he was going
to be the next receiver of memory. When the was said the whole crowd
gasped. Being the receiver of memory a role in the community no one
wanted to have. This makes Jonas special because the receiver of memory
was a very frowned upon job and the fact that Joans has gotten it makes us
and him think his is special. As we can see through the character of Jonas
we and characterisation it impacts our understanding of the book and how
characters and people live in The Giver’.
