Fall 2023 Homework 6

PH 531: Electromagnetic Theory I

1. Jackson 3.3.

Hint:
p From the given information, you need to assume the surface charge density to be a constant times
1/ R2 − ρ2 . That constant will be fixed by the given potential V on the disk.

This is a problem with azimuthal symmetry. The potential on the z-axis can be found from elementary
means. Find that first and use the trick that we covered in class to write down the solution for any point in
space.

2. Jackson 3.9.

Hint: From the given boundary conditions at z = 0 and z = L as well as the fact that there is no charge,
narrow down the general solution into the specific solution for this problem in terms of some coefficients,
which are to be determined from the remaining boundary condition given on the cylindrical surface.

Note: Modified Bessel functions rather than the regular ones will be involved. Why?

3. Jackson 3.12(a).

Hint: This is a problem with azimuthal symmetry. In addition to the information given, the potential has to
remain finite as z → +∞.

4. Jackson 3.18(a).

Hint: The placement of the additional grounded plane will imply a different form of the z-dependent part of
the potential compared to Jackson 3.12.
