The fruit of vanity

A reader of the Grail Message asked:

Question:
Towards the end of the lecture “Intuition” (The Grail Message, Vol. II – 70), it is stated:
“It was a fruit of vanity, which developed through the appearance of woman in
creation.”

My questions are:
1. What was the fruit of vanity?
2. Was it woman that caused the hereditary sin?

Answer:
To get a rounded view of the issues raised here, it may be helpful to address various
underlying as well as intertwined concepts, such as:
1. The beginnings of the spirit-germ on earth.
2. The elevation of the intellect to the dominant position, vis-à-vis the spirit’s
sensing volition.
3. Overcultivation of the front-brain.
4. Vanity.
5. The fruits of vanity.
6. The “appearance of woman on earth”.
7. The hereditary sin and its cause.

In the early part of his sojourn on earth, the spirit-germ was in constant and close
connection with the light streams.

Being of spirit, that is, the active splitting from the personality stream that included the
substantiate beings as the passive part, he went full-steam ahead to begin “subjugating”
or taking over the coarse-material environment with his spirit-will, while fully
cooperating with the substantiate beings.

Over time – spanning millions of years and innumerable reincarnations – he became


conscious of the clear difference between his own nature and that of the substantiate
beings, as well as of the various animals that he experienced in his earthly environment.

This first “consciousness of difference” was a necessary – indeed essential – rung on his
ladder of development in coarse-matter.

It paved the way for the second “consciousness of difference”, that is, the awareness
that amongst the spirit-germs themselves, there were two distinct orientations.

The spirit-germs came to realise that while all of them were active as spirits in the so-
called subjugation of the world of matter to their spirit-will, some of their ranks did so in
a more delicate – or passive – manner than the others.

Those who were of a more delicate disposition – the females, who were passive,
naturally – began to separate themselves (at first inwardly and later also outwardly)
from their companions.

In their inward separation, the delicately disposed (female and passive) spirit-germs
relied more and more on the higher substantiality (which they, exclusively, had carried
within themselves all along) to maintain and strengthen the connection with the light.

As a natural and logical progression of this and under a definite high guidance, they
(slowly but surely) consciously ceded the domination of the earthly environment to
their more coarsely disposed colleagues, that is, the males, who lived and worked in an
active fashion. These male spirit-germs, in their own way, had also in the meantime
come to strongly realise this difference of orientation.

While the two sets of spirit-germs, prior to developing the different orientations, had
previously carried out all tasks necessary for their collective and individual survival and
upkeep together, their activities now diverged; and they started to predominantly focus
on the tasks conforming more with their emergent passive or active orientations.

The males among them continued to mostly hunt animals, build dwellings, protect the
group from other groups and fight off predators; while the females devoted themselves
mostly to gathering foods and herbs, farming, and rearing their offspring, for example.

After another very long span of time, the females gradually became conscious of their
destiny of being the primary spirit-connection with the higher regions. They also slowly
knew that only they possessed the means (the bridge of higher substantiality) through
which the coming onto the earth-plane of other spirit-germs was made possible.

In time, the females also got to know that along with their own wishing or longing to be
and remain connected with the light heights, they additionally had an influence or say in
how the males of their species developed, nurtured, and manifested the wish or longing
to be connected with the lighter realms.

Effectively therefore, the females, already at that time, were the promoters / protectors
or guardianesses of the longing for the light amongst the bands of developing spirit-
germs.

Having come this far in their development and consciousness, the creator bestowed the
honour and mantle of womanhood (as a special accolade and highest honour in this
creation) upon the female spirit-germ on earth. Woman thereby “appeared” on earth.

In becoming women, the female spirit-germs entered an entirely new phase in their
experiencing as living beings in creation. They were now connected with the powerful
radiations of pure and wholesome womanhood emanating from Irmingard, the Pure
Lily, under the guidance / protection of the Primordial Queen of womanhood, Elisabeth.

The male spirit-germs, in turn, slowly became aware of the stark differences between
them and their female counterparts; until finally, the loftiness of the new nature and
special status in creation of their female colleagues increasingly dawned on them.

The active-working male spirit-germ became inwardly disposed towards constantly and
unconditionally protecting every passive-working woman (whom he had hitherto simply
regarded as being just females of the same species) around him. This new disposition of
the males to vigorously protect woman was in growing recognition of the precious
(indeed priceless) gems that the latter had become in the meantime.

In yielding to this powerful sensing or urge, the male of the species became man! Only
then did he acquire the possibility of ever becoming of full value in subsequent creation.

The maintenance and enhancement of his manliness was determined by and directly
dependent upon the degree of protection that he chose to afford the woman; as well as
the pride of place that he voluntarily yielded to the woman while looking up to her in
her womanliness and also her exclusive role of being the spirit-connection to the light.

Man thoroughly enjoyed – in fact relished – the activities that protecting woman
entailed, not least because of the very warm and oftentimes intoxicating appreciation
for man that increasingly emanated from woman in return for being so well protected.

And so, man tried harder and harder to surpass himself in making woman comfortable
on earth. In doing this, he sought and used all possible ways of accomplishing the
narrow and lopsided objective of earthly protection and earthly provision for woman
and her offspring.

As a matter of course, he had to increasingly utilise his intellect and its acumen, in order
to achieve this narrow earthly objective that he had set for himself with his spirit-will.

The setting of this narrow and exclusively earthly objective and the use of the intellect
to achieve it was man’s greatest failure and an unlawful interference with the divine
plan for the human spirit. It meant that the spirit-germ effectively surrendered the
setting of goals and the evaluation of the accomplishment of those goals to the intellect,
and through that, to the front-brain. This is at the core of the great fall of mankind.

The consequence was that his exclusive use of the front-brain – the cerebrum that is the
seat of the intellect – increased until its activity was out of all proportion to that of the
now neglected back-brain – the cerebellum – which is the tool of the sensing (intuition).

Man’s disproportionate use of the front-brain led to the anomaly of its greater size over
time, which was then eventually passed on to his offspring through physical inheritance.

The high esteem that woman had for man lavishing so much attention on her directly
and indirectly caused, under Lucifer’s cunning promptings, man’s cultivation of vanity.

Conceptually, vanity is basically the preoccupation with elevating one’s own stature or
intrinsic value, as seen by others. The vain person wants to and really enjoys being
thought of as more valuable or more significant than he actually is in the scheme of this
creation. And when he himself believes that false narrative, conceit inevitably set in.

Rather than woman decisively and repeatedly re-orientating man towards the light by
discouraging him from only giving her earthly attention and also providing only outward
comforts, as she was repeatedly and clearly guided to do, woman instead opted to
enjoy these earthly pleasures disharmoniously and one-sidedly, thereby further
tempting man to engage in more of exactly those and similar creation-limited activities.

Furthermore, in trying to make and keep man beholden to herself, woman descended
to the very low level of using her innate coarse-material charms to deliberately incite
man’s physical instincts and even worse, to keep them constantly excited.

But to fully accomplish this new self-given goal, woman had to firmly turn her gaze onto
much more earthly - physical - things and to focus less and less on her light-connection
duties. Basically, she accepted transient pleasures instead of long-term joys of the spirit.

And since well before that time, she had ceded the dominion over the earth-plane to
man, she now had to settle instead for indirect but nevertheless effective domination of
the man as such! The darkness gladly aided and abetted this move at every turn.

Woman inevitably proceeded down the slippery slope of focussing on the things that
would attract, appeal to, and sustain the admiration of the man. That is, she too
became ensnared by vanity!

Coming at it from different directions, woman and man became fully and inextricably
subservient to vanity, which bore many distasteful fruits.

One of these devastating consequences of vanity was the compulsion to heavily utilise
the front-brain to find ever more clever ways of satisfying the desires to please the
other person.

And the spirit-will had no input into this, since the spirit-germ had previously voluntarily
surrendered the setting of goals and the evaluation of the accomplishment of those
goals to the intellect.

Man worked very hard to keep woman devoted only to himself; while woman similarly
did everything in her power to ensure that man did not look towards any other woman
for his pleasures. Both exclusively utilised their front-brains for this base and ultimately
evil purpose. The goal was evil, and the path thereto could not but be evil too.

The imbalance in the sizes of the front and back brains, brought about by the overuse of
the former at the expense of the latter, is the grievously evil outcome of humanity’s
interference with the divine ordinance described earlier.

The fact that this evil is perpetuated across subsequent generations through physical
inheritance further deepens the guilt of mankind in the eyes of the laws of creation and
seriously complicates the atonement that is required to obliterate this gravest of sins.

The declaration at the end of the referenced lecture is of the greatest importance and at
the same time points out the way to salvation:
“If man does not wish to be lost, he should at last tear himself away from the results of this
hereditary sin.

Naturally, since he has to take trouble over everything, this is no exception. Man must awaken
from his comfortable indolence to become at last what he should have been from the beginning:
One who is bent on furthering Creation and a mediator of Light to all creatures!”

It bears reiterating that first and foremost, the woman of subsequent creation must, of
necessity and extreme urgency, now firmly take the lead in these quite indispensable
tasks of furthering creation and mediating light to all creatures.

Man on his own has no possibility of ascending to the luminous heights other than by
following the leadership for him that woman must provide. The one simply cannot
succeed without the other! That is the law of the development of the spirit-germ.
