PRACTICAL 3
Aim: To crimp and test UTP cable.

Objectives: 1. To identify the specification of stripped through cable and its

purpose.
2. To identify the pros and cons of patch cables over twisted pair
cable.

Q. Which category cable is normally preferred for LAN and why?

=>
Category 5e and above are normally preferred for LAN because Cat 5 cables are designed for
100 Mbps applications and are useful for 1000 Mbps applications but for short distances. But
category 5e eliminates this problem by supporting 100 Mbps over long distances and
supporting 1000Mbps better making the network more flexible and redundant.

Q. Significance of each colour codes wires?

=>
The orange wire and white with an orange stripe are one pair which carry one signal together
in one direction (party1-to-party2) or bidirectionally and the green wire and white with a
green stripe is the usual other pair that carries a second signal in the other direction (party2-
to-party1) or bidirectionally. These two pairs are the minimum CAT cable wires required for
an Ethernet connection. There are two more wire pairs (blue + white/blue and brown +

white/brown) in the same cable that are generally unused, but which are sometimes used for
power supply (POE), or for arbitration (flow control).

Q. How many twists do you normally find in cat 5, 5e and 6.

=>
Cat 5 and 5e cable normally uses 1.5 - 2 twists per centimetre whereas Cat 6 cables use 2+
twists per centimetre.

Q. Latest version of patch cable available?

=>
The latest version of patch cable available is cat 8. A detailed comparison is given below:

Q. What's a roll over cable?

=>
A network cable with wires that are rolled over and reversed in sequence on each end is
called a rollover cable. The first wire connected to the first pin on one end is the same color
as the wire attached to the last pin on the opposite end.
It is used to connect unlike devices like PC to router.

Summary:

1. Thus, we got to know about different types of cables used, its different configurations
and the connections required.
2. We learnt how to physically crimp, cut and connect the wires to make a working
patch cable.
3. We made two different types of cables, a straight cable and a roll over cable.
4. We learnt how to adjust the colour coding to make different configuration of wires.
5. We also learnt about different types of wires, it’s version and advantage of different
versions over the other.
