At the end of the lesson the learner should be able to;
1. Infer the speaker’s tone, mood, and purpose.
2. Infer the meaning of unfamiliar blended words based on given context clues.
3. Understand the importance of using blended words in a sentence.

grow up.
Ask: What can you say about the pictures? How do you think will you able to
reach your dream in life?

1. Discussion
Have the pupils listen to “Be the Best of Whatever You Are” by Doughlas
Malloch.
a. What is the difference between the following?

b. Which of the two in each pair would you like to be? Why?

c. What does the poet want you to do? Why?

d. What is the mood of the poem?

2. Discussion Analysis

Tone refers to the poet’s attitude towards the subject or topic of the poem as in

serious, happy, indifferent;mood is the overall emotion or feeling expressed in

the poem, like optimism, hope, passion.


A poet’s purpose in writing may be to instruct or inform, to entertain, or to

pursuade.

Sometimes called pormanteau words (French word or suitcase), blended words

consist of two words whose parts are “folded” into one forming a new word

with another meaning.

D. Generalization

Give example of blended words.

E. Application

Work with a partner. Determine the two words that make up each italicized blended

word. Then use it in your own sentence. Do this on your paper.

1. There are a dozen of plastic plates and fifteen pieces of spork for the picnic.

2. Tons of information on any topic or subject can be accessed or research through the

internet.

3. Don’t be a chump! You don’t swim in those shirt and trousers and sneakers.
4. When the boxing champion arrived at the airport, he was welcomed and ushered

into an open car for the motorcade.

5. Celebrities usually attend parties with glitz.

F. Evaluation

Supply the blend word for each set of entry. Then, use the portmanteau words to

complete the sentences below.
