Introduction

IP CCTV System
An IP camera, or Internet protocol camera, is a type of digital
security camera that receives and sends video footage via an
IP network. They are commonly used for surveillance. Unlike
analogue closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV), IP cameras
do not require a local recording device, only a local network.
The IP CCTV camera system comprises multiple items or
devices that work together. The IP camera system includes
the IP cameras, the network video recording (NVR) system,
camera enclosures, lenses, PoE switches, surge protectors,
and analytic software.

A typical IP CCTV System is as shown below:

COMPONENTS OF IP BASED CCTV SYSTEM

IP CCTV requires several components such as IP cameras,
switches, NVRs, Servers monitoring stations, and Cat6 type cables.
Here is the explanation:

 IP Camera (Dome, Bullet &PTZ)

PTZ BULLET DOME

An Internet Protocol camera, or IP camera, is a type of digital

video camera that receives control data and sends image data via
an IP network. They are commonly used for surveillance, & most
IP cameras are webcams, but the term IP
camera or netcam usually applies only to those that can be directly
accessed over a network connection.
IP cameras require support of a central network video
recorder (NVR) to handle the recording, video and alarm
management. Others are able to operate in a decentralized
manner with no NVR needed, as the camera is able to record
directly to any local or remote storage media.

Dome Cameras are basically used for indoor purpose due to the
easy fix design on the ceilings.

Bullet cameras are normally used in wall and outdoor poles

PTZ cameras are used for analytic purpose, Deep monitoring of

objects and movements in 360-degree view angle. Usually used in
Stadiums, Power Plants and ports.

Common Fault Troubleshooting Steps

Video streaming issue from Camera

Check CCTV Switch power in Server room rack
Check Patch cords are fixed properly from Switch to patch panel
Check the LED light in Camera is working or not.

 NVR (Network Video Recorder)

NVR’s

NVR or Network Video Recording is a component used to store

data and contains software that can help you analyse the
recordings.
A security camera in a CCTV system only produces live footage,
and you need a recorder to save this footage so you can go back
and view it later. All security cameras can record 24/7; however,
this takes up plenty of storage space. Instead, most CCTV systems
record during certain hours of the day or when the camera detects
movement.

Common Fault Troubleshooting Steps

Recording issue
Check Recroding is enabled from NVR Menu—Settings---Record
setup
Check the hard disks are online or offline from HDD settings
Power Issue
Check the power cord is connected properly and power is ON

 Recording-NVR Server

Site -Photographs

SERVER’s
The recording server is responsible for communicating with the
network cameras and video encoders, recording the retrieved
audio and video as well as providing client access to both live and
recorded audio and video. CCTV server is commonly required
where a large number of cameras are operating for long periods

The network video server is a device that records video from IP

cameras and runs special video management software. The
platform for the VMS is normally a Windows computer. A special
video format is used to record video onto the computer's hard
drives.

Recording servers are computers where you have installed

the Recording Server software, and configured it to communicate
with the management server.
Common Fault Troubleshooting Steps

Power Issue
Check the power cord is connected properly and power is ON
Software hanged
Restart the software / Server
Update to the latest version.

 IP CCTV Recording Devices (Hard Disk Storage)

NVR’s

NVRs of CCTV systems use hard disks for storage of the captured
video footage. However, unlike your typical computer hard disk,
these recorders require surveillance-grade hard disks that can run,
write, and rewrite data 24/7 if required. The Network Video
Recorder (NVR) also can be used as CCTV recording storages
according to the scale of projects.
For this purpose, the hard disks for a CCTV system are built with
more durable and reliable components than regular computer
hard disks.

Common Fault Troubleshooting Steps

Not Recording
Check the Hard disk is on line or offline.
Physically check the LEDs are blinking

 Video Management Software (VMS)

SCMS-Monitoring Software

This is the brain of any IP based CCTV system, which process the
captured data from CCTV cameras. The captured videos are
transmitted as digital data through network devices and in
technical term known as video management software(VMS). This
CCTV processing software is able to record, monitor, report and
integrate CCTV video footages. There is a wide list of features
embedded to this CCTV software that could help create a very
efficient system. The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
detection software is an example of a module supported by VMS
which enables to detect a number plate of a vehicle using IP CCTV
camera technology. the face detection software and people
counting modules can be integrated with an IP CCTV System using
VMS Software.

Common Fault Troubleshooting Steps

Software hanged
Restart the software / Server
Update to the latest version.

 Monitor / Display Units

Display Monitors

A display allows you to examine collected photos and recordings,

view or monitor recorded or live footage which is perhaps the
most essential feature of a security camera. Display units of a CCTV
system can range from a basic monochrome display to a Full HD
color monitor.

With IP cameras and NVRs, you can also view live or recorded
footage remotely from anywhere in the world using your
smartphone or computer.

Common Fault Troubleshooting Steps

No Display
Check the Power Supply is on line.
Check the Video Cable is connected properly
Check the Monitor is faulty or not

 Network connectivity devices

Network Switches with fibre&Cat6 Patch
cord connectivity

This part of the IP CCTV system often includes, network switches

and network cables. Selection network switches depend on the
number of cameras, amount of bandwidth in every location.
Cables can be selected according to the distances and the choice
of cable material will depend on the client’s requirements and the
drafted plans of network installation. Decisions will vary
depending if its fibre or copper cables.

Common Fault Troubleshooting Steps

Camera offline
Check the Switch Power Supply is on line or not
Check the Switch LED is blinking or not.

 Structured Cabling

Fibre Cables Cat6 Cables

CCTV
Rack

One of the most important and lesser-known components of a CCTV

system is structured cabling. All the components of a CCTV system
require some amount of cabling, even with wireless cameras. The
cabling connects the various components or equipment to each other;
this includes all the monitors, modems, security cameras, and
recorders.

Typically, Ethernet cables(Cat6) or high-speed network cables(Fibre)

are used for this purpose. Dedicated cabling is also used for a more
secure CCTV system.

Common Fault Troubleshooting Steps

Camera offline-
Check the continuity of fibre or CAT6
Check the patch cords are connected properly between switch&
Patch panels

 Joystick Controller
