'Mush!'
Posted by Lewis Chang at 9:20 p.m. on 18th May 2020

I like trying unusual forms of transport- especially ones that involve animals! Last
winter, I had a chance to try one of the most unusual forms of animal transport in
the world -travelling by dog sled in Alaska, USA. Although I hate feeling cold, I had an
amazing time!

5 First, my tour guide, Tom, and I put our backpacks on the sled. Then he told me to
sit down on the sled. Next, he stood at the back of the sled and yelled, 'Mush!' The
dogs - one leader followed by five pairs - started running fast until Tom made them
slow down. After that, they ran about ten kilometres per hour. The sled was made
of wood, but I sat on a cushion, so it was quite comfortable.

10 After we travelled for a few hours, Tom made a campfire on a frozen lake. Then he
took out a long tool made of metal. Next, he started hitting the ice until there was a
hole in it. Finally, he put a line into the hole. I don't usually enjoy fishing, but this was
different. I couldn't believe I was ice fishing in Alaska!

We caught two big fish. Tom fried them over the campfire and made tea in a kettle.
15 After we ate lunch, Tom fed the dogs. Finally, we started sledding back to Fairbanks.
Halfway there, Tom stopped the sled. The dogs seemed to like me, so Tom asked me
if l wanted to try driving the sled. I ran quickly to the back of the sled. 'Mush! Mush!'
I yelled- as loud as I could!
