Finding the optimum
lens and formatTake a look atthe shots on the tile page.
Everyone knows the problem — round
objects taken with short focal lengths
show distortion at the edge of the shot.
Photographers get up to every kind of
trick to eliminate this fault. This SINAR
Info describes how to tackle the problem.
Lot's start off with the conceptot perspec:
lve.
Perspective
The illusion of three-dimensional space
can be created on a two-dimensional
plane with perspective. Geometrical per-
spective is based on the fact that the
dimensions appear smaller the greater
the distance is. In other words an object
will appearlarge close up, and very small
from a lone way off. The choice of the
camera viewpoint therefore enables the
Perspective to be deliberately influen-
ced,
Frequently the camera viewpoint anc
focal length are determined by viewing
the subject on the focusing screen. This
‘method leads to unnecessary limitations,
land you can waste a lt of time and lose
‘most of your creative potential inthis way.
Professional photography is realistic
photography. Use a format mask to
establish the camera viewpoint and the
perspective you want al varying
distances and viewpoints. Once you
have done this, you know which is the
fight lens.

When you decide the right camera
distance, both the shape of the photo-
‘graphed subject and the space involved
Play important roles. As far as docu:
mentary photography goes, there are
roughly two main types of subjects: sub-
jects inthe shape ofacube and spherical
(ound) ones. Here are two examples,
‘The box of coloured pencils on the left
(Fig. 4) was shot rom along way off with a
SINARON-S 360 mm. The edges of the
box are almost parallel, due to the
distance of the camera viewpoint. This
makes the picture flat and uninteresting
With a closer viewpoint the front edge of
the box is much nearer to the lens than
the back edge, in relation tothe distance,
and is therefore depicted bigger. Re
Ceding lines appear. The picture on the
fight (Fig. 5) was taken close up with a
SINARON-W 65 mm and looks dynamic
and alive.
Tho effect ofa shor focal length is quite
