GENETICS:

Incomplete Dominance
& Codominance
WELCOME TO OUR LESSON
S7L3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information
to explain how organisms reproduce either sexually
or asexually and transfer genetic information to
determine the traits of their offspring.
EQ: Can I determine the incomplete dominant and
codominant phenotypes by using Punnett Squares?
WHAT IS INCOMPLETE
DOMINANCE?
Incomplete dominance is when the
heterozygous genotype produces a phenotype
that falls between the dominant and recessive
traits.
In flowers, petal color demonstrates incomplete dominance. A
flower that is heterozygous for this trait will be pink.

R R
r Rr Rr
r Rr Rr
Crossing homozygous dominant alleles (RR) with homozygous
recessive alleles (rr) will result in heterozygous alleles (Rr).
WHAT IS CODOMINANCE?

Codominance is when both alleles of a gene

are expressed in heterozygous offspring.
In cows, coat color demonstrates codominance. A cow that is
heterozygous for this trait will be black and white.

B B
W BW BW
W BW BW
Crossing homozygous dominant alleles (BB) with homozygous
dominant alleles (WW) will result in heterozygous alleles (BW).
YOUR TURN

If you cross 2 pink flowers (Rr) with each

INCOMPLETE
DOMINANCE other, then what will be the resulting
genotypes and phenotypes?

If you cross a black cow (BB) with a black

CODOMINANCE & white cow (BW), then what will be the
resulting genotypes and phenotypes?
