OmniScan Dual Linear Array Probe for

Corrosion Inspection
PART 2 - UT and C-scan Configuration

MXU 4.3R2
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – OmniScan Bootup
 Turn on the OmniScan and using the touch screen and upon boot up select the
operating system version. (MXU 4.3)
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Preconfigured Files cont.
 The Olympus dual linear array corrosion probe is designed to be used with one of the
preconfigured files with optimized beam size and focal depth based on thickness.
 These files are delivered on a USB thumb drive with the DLA corrosion probe from
the Olympus factory.
 The default files provided are designed for carbon steel materials with a default
longitudinal velocity of 5890 meters\sec.
 Files must be selected based on the following three criteria and moved to the
:\User\Setup folder on the SD memory card:
1. OmniScan Instrument. (MX, MX2, SX)
2. OmniScan module. (PA1 or PA2)
3. Thickness range.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Getting Started – File Open
 Using the touch screen, press and hold on the file name area of the header and
select Open.
 Repeat, the files must be moved to the :\User\Setup folder on the SD memory card
or they will not be visible when selecting file open.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Setup Optimization Overview
 Configuration of the OmniScan setup file for use with the dual linear array corrosion
probe requires the following:
– UT configuration.
– Gate configuration.
– C-scan configuration.
– File save.
 These parameters will be adjusted based on the material thickness, surface condition
and damage mechanism such as corrosion, pitting, HIC, creep, etc.
 Inspection of materials other than carbon steel requires a velocity to be calculated
through the OmniScan velocity wizard described in another section.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Layout A-scan \ S-scan
 After loading one of the three default setup files, couple the probe to a component,
step wedge, or calibration standard of known thickness. (12mm in this example)
 From the interactive title bar select the A-S layout. A signal should be present in the
A-scan and S-scan with the probe coupled.

Component back wall

OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – UT Configuration cont.
 Select Menu > UT >General and adjust the UT start to 0mm and UT range to cover
the inspection area.
 In most cases the UT range need only be long enough to cover the first back wall but
when using gate B-A functions to remove coatings the range must be long enough to
cover at least two back walls.

Component back wall

OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – UT Configuration cont.
 At any time the UT start and range can be adjusted using the touch screen by
tapping on the purple UT axis ruler as below.

UT Start
Component back wall

UT Range
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – UT Configuration cont.
 Select UT > Pulser and adjust the voltage for best results.
 In most cases the 40V option is sufficient but for thicker or more attenuative materials
or where poor surface conditions or coatings are present best results may be
available at a higher voltage.
 The pulse width is automatically adjusted based on the probe frequency.

Component back wall

OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – UT Configuration cont.
 Select UT > Receiver and adjust the filter, rectification, and video filter for best
results.
 Leave averaging at 1. (No averaging) It is not helpful for this application and will
slow down the PRF significantly.

Component back wall

OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – UT Configuration cont.
 Adjust the UT gain so that the back wall is between 100-200% amplitude.
 The amplitude of the back wall or general gain used for inspection must be adjusted
based on current conditions and will affect the accuracy of the thickness reading, the
detectability of small flaws, and the ability to image the back wall condition.

OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Gate Configuration
 Select > Gate\Alarms > Gates > Parameters: Mode.
 Select > Peak Selection: First Peak and Measure: Edge.
 This is the default mode for corrosion and can be changed to first or max peak mode
if necessary. (Not recommended for corrosion readings)
 This mode will affect where and at what amplitude the thickness reading (T) is
measured.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Gate Configuration cont.
 A-scan synchronization mode is not available when using the dual linear array probe
because there is no surface interface signal available for which to place the yellow
synchronization gate.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Gate Configuration cont.
 Set the red gate A start position at 0-1mm. One of the benefits of the dual linear
array probe is that there is no surface interface signal that will interfere with detection
and readings near or at the component surface.
 Set the red gate A to extend past the 1st back wall as pictured below.
 The gate A start, width, and threshold is visible in the A-scan and S-scan displays at
all times.

Component back wall

OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Gate Configuration cont.
 At any time the gate position and threshold can be changed directly on the A-scan or
S-scan display using the touch screen by tapping the gate as below.
 The gates can be hidden from the displays by deselecting them in the options menu
on the interactive title bar.
 Gates are active at all times whether displayed or not on the A-scan and S-scan.

Width
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Gate Configuration cont.
 Select Gate\Alarms > Thickness > Source and select the appropriate gate reading.
 A/ is the default setting and will provide best results for typical inspections for back
wall corrosion monitoring and readings.
 This list will change when the gate mode is changed and any option utilizing gate B
(Green) or gate I (Yellow) requires those gates to be configured appropriately.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Gate Configuration cont.
 The minimum and maximum thickness will default to the gate position and can be
modified.
 This thickness range will set the limit of the T and TminZ readings and can be
changed in the data file after inspection.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – C-scan Configuration cont.
 From the interactive menu, select the A-C-S layout. This will enable the C-scan.
 The C-scan displays the data in the gate from the A-scan and S-scan and is available
for amplitude typical of weld inspection and thickness typical of corrosion monitoring.

A-scan S-scan

C-scan
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – C-scan Configuration cont.
 By default the C-scan is configured for a clock inspection and will record data at the
speed of the PRF visible in the header. (60mm\sec below)
 Configuration of the encoder for data recording is explained in its own section.

A-scan S-scan

C-scan
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – C-scan Configuration cont.
 Select > Scan > Area and adjust the length of the C-scan as needed.
 Modifying these parameters will change the length of scan recorded in the data file
and the length of the data visible on the C-scan whether the data is recorded or not.
 Adjusting this parameter will also change the size of the data file and the amount of
data points that are stored in it when the pause and save data buttons are selected.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – C-scan Configuration cont.
 If a C-scan is defined that contains more data points than the number of pixels
available on the current C-scan layout, a red C appears in the header indicating that
compression is present.
 The OmniScan compression will ensure that the thinnest or most relevant color pixel
is displayed when one pixel represents multiple data points.

 Zooming on the C-scan until

the data points are 1:1 with
the pixels in the display will
take the C-scan out of
compression mode.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – C-scan Configuration cont.
 Select the top and bottom part of the color palette and observe the minimum and
maximum.
 This range defaults to the same min\max as the thickness reading described in the
gate configuration but can be reduced to optimize the color palette for current
inspection conditions.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – C-scan Configuration cont.
 It is normal inspection practice to set with the color palette range from 1mm to the
nominal thickness (1-12mm below) to start the inspection and reduce it for better
contrast and imaging after inspection conditions are known.
 This is possible during the inspection or after the inspection in the data file.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – C-scan Configuration cont.
 At any time using the touch screen the color palette can be manipulated by dragging
the purple bar to the right of the color scale as pictured below.
 A double tap on the same bar returns the color palette to the full range.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Readings
 The OmniScan displays readings such as T (Thickness) and ML% (Percent material
loss) in two groups of four each in the header that are visible at all times.
 Tapping the touch screen on the readings area will toggle between the two groups of
four each.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Readings cont.
 The default setup files provided with the dual linear array corrosion probe are already
configured for the corrosion inspection group of 8 readings.
 An explanation of each reading from the corrosion list is available in the analysis
section of this training series.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – Readings cont.
 Any of the 8 available readings in the group can be changed individually and are also
available in pre-defined lists for different applications such as corrosion.
 The readings that are selected in the OmniScan setup are passed to the data file and
because all A-scans are retained can be changed on the OmniScan or in OmniPC
while performing analysis after the inspection.
OmniScan Dual Linear Array Corrosion Probe – File Save
 After the setup file has been configured it should be saved to the SD memory card.
 Using the touch screen, press and hold over the file name area in the header and
select Save As.
 This will enable the file name to be entered and saved using the touch screen.
 The location of saved setup files (Ops files) is under the :\User\Setup folder on the
SD memory card.
