Objective: To identify the lens form

What is the lens form: Relationship between the front surface and the back surface of an ophthalmic?

Prior knowledge required:

1. Terminologies of the lens form

2. Surface power

Two type: Convex and Concave

What is Meniscus?

Once surface is convex and the other surface is Concave.

What is the difference between Convex meniscus and Concave meniscus?

Meniscus meaning Shape of the moon in (Eid).

In convex meniscus, convex curvature is steeper than concave. The total power of convex meniscus is
plus.

In concave meniscus, convex curvature is flatter than concave. The total power of concave meniscus is
minus.

Convex meniscus is also called as Convex-o-concave lens. Concave meniscus is also called as Concave o
convex lens.

Bi-Convex/Bi concave: Bi means both. Both convex (Bi Convex) or both concave (Bi Concave)

Planoconvex/Planoconcave: One surface is plane (no curvature)

Equiconvex or Equiconcave: It is the form in which both surfaces have same curvature and power.

Procedure:

1. Identify the front surface power

2. Identify back surface power
3. Identify the total power of the lens
4. Refer to the following diagram to identify lens form
5. You can also refer to different examples mentioned in table.
