Cell Cycle & Mitosis Activity
Part 1: Labeling
In the following animal cell micrograph, identify and label (using proper biological drawing guidelines)
the following structures or phases:
a) a cell in anaphase f) a cell in telophase
b) cell membrane g) a cell in prophase
c) spindle fibers h) cleavage furrow
d) chromosome i) a cell in metaphase
e) centrosome
Part 2
In this activity, you will calculate the lengths of the various phases of the cell cycle in an onion root tip.
Go to Onion Root Tips at

1. Proceed through the activity, identifying the phase for each cell you are shown.
Pay attention to the hints if you misidentify a cell at first.
2. Once you have finished the online activity fill in Table 1 with the total number of cells that you
identified in each phase.
3. Use this equation to calculate the percent of cells in each phase. Add these value to your table.
Round your answer to one decimal point.
Show all your work for the first calculation.
Number of cells in the Phase × 100
36 (Total Number of Cells)
4. Give the table an appropriate title
Table 1 – ______________________________________________________________________
Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Total
Number of
36
cells
Percent of
100
cells
5. Now enter the percentages you calculated above into an Excel spreadsheet, and create a pie graph
using this data. Add appropriate labels and print the graph.
When you have completed the activity, answer the following questions:
1. What percent of cells were in interphase?
2. What percent were in some part of mitosis? Explain your answer.
3. Which phase of mitosis takes the longest? Why is this the case?
4. How can you recognize a cell in metaphase?
5. Why is it important that the chromosomes line up along the metaphase plate (middle of the cell)?
6. What is the purpose of cytokinesis?
