VICTORIOUS LIVING

PREPARING FOR LIFE’S BATTLES

If we read Joshua, its like a war movie….

Based on true story. How do these soldiers prepare for battle?

Now, think of yourself and how you prepare for battle?

For me, how did I prepare for this lesson tonight?

How we prepare for the challenges of life?

Lets go back to scripture… Israelites did the impossible, they crossed the River Jordan in Jericho 4.

Anticipating God’s promise to them to lead them to promise land. The story does not end there….

PREPARING FOR LIFE’s BATTLE?

How GOD will prepare us.

What battles have you faced? How were you prepared?

Lets look at our lives.

The more obvious are finances, temptation, consistency in following God’s word.

There are also the “respectable sins”:

Strained relationships

Bitterness and unforgiveness

Pride, selfishness

Mental and emotional problems

Legal problems

Financial

Work
Addiction

Lack of direction

FEAR and DOUBT

What can we learn from Joshua 5”

PREPARING FOR LIFE’s BATTLES

1. Consecration
2. Celebration
3. Confidence
4. Complete obedience

These 4 are declaration to the LORD

Joshua 5

Verse 1 – All the kings heard how the Lord dried up the river so sons of Israel could cross. Parting of the
Jordan River.

RECAP LAST WEEKS

JOSHUA 5

1Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard
how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts
melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

2At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.” 3So Joshua
made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.

4Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age—died in the
wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.

1. CONSECRATION

DECLARATION IS ; THE LORD IS MY MASTER

Easy to say. But hard to do. THE LORD OWNS ME and I love serving you.

UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER TO GOD.

OUR MAIN VERSES

Remember last week? Circumcise again? Joshua verse 2-4.

Insert Joshua 5:5-7

5All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the
journey from Egypt had not. 6The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness forty years until all the
men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For
the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors
to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were
the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on
the way.

Look back at a sad story when the people forfeited their entry to the promise land because of
disobedience.

Moses sent 12 spies. People decided not to go… people were disobedient and were not allowed to enter
the promise land. This was in NUMBERS. If you don’t follow God? Consequences.

Consecrated to God, why Circumcision?

Covenant. Binding promise with each other with lifelong devotion… belonging to GOD alone.

Doing away with fleshly and worldly ways… not just excess skin.

What about us? How do we consecrate ourselves to the Lord?

Public affirmation, Baptism, our Prayer and Fasting… between us and the Lord.

JOSHUA 5:8-9

God prepared his people for battle.

And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they
were healed.

9Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place
has been called Gilgal to this day.
2. CELEBRATION – JOSHUA 5:10

10On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho,
the Israelites celebrated the Passover.

a. DECLARATION: THE LORD IS MY SAVIOUR!

i. I SEE PROBLEMS… I GIVE THANKS… THANK YOU LORD FOR MY STORY IS
UNFILDING AND EXPERIENCING YOUR GLORY
ii. THE LORD IS MY SAVIOR! YOU ARE MY MASTER.

3. CONFIDENCE – JOSHUA 5:11-12 – THE LORD IS MY PROVIDER

11The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread
and roasted grain. 12The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no
longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.

a. How did God teach this?

b. Man does not live by bread alone but from the word of GOD… look into your lives and
see this to be true.
c. Philipians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory
in Christ Jesus.
d. What is the provision of God that you are experiencing now? Share it…
e. HOW DID THE LORD PREPARE ME FOR THE BATTLE OF MY LIFE?
f. LORD MY CONFIDENCE IN YOU BECAUSE THE LORD IS MY PROVIDER

4. COMPLETE OBEDIENCE – THE LORD IS MY COMMANDER

a. HE TALKS, I LISTEN, I OBEY
b. JOSHUA 5:13
The Fall of Jericho
13Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with
a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our
enemies?”
c. JOSHUA 5:14-15 – GOD HIMSELF….Joshua fell to his knees and bowed down

d. Joshua realized, he was not the boss, but the LORD… remove your sandals… Joshua
listened
14“Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then
Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord
have for his servant?”
15The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you
are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

It is difficult to SURRENDER… but it leads us to VICTORIOUS LIVING

WITH GOD THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES… ONLY DIVINE PLANS

DESPITE THE CIRCUMSTNCES… LORD, YOU ARE STILL MY MASTER.

THAT IS VICTORIOUS LIVING.
