The Godfather is a 1972 crime film that follows the Corleone crime family, a powerful mafia

clan headed by patriarch Vito Corleone. The film is divided into two parts: the first part is set
in the late 1940s and early 1950s and focuses on the Corleones' rise to power, while the
second part, set in the mid 1950s, deals with the consequences of their actions.

The first part of the film begins with the wedding of Vito Corleone's daughter Connie. It is at
this event that Vito is approached by rival gangster Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo, who wants
Vito's support in a drug trafficking operation. Vito refuses, and Sollozzo retaliates by
attempting to assassinate Vito. Vito survives the assassination attempt but is left unable to
continue running the family. This is where Michael Corleone, Vito's youngest son, steps in.
Michael, who had previously wanted nothing to do with the family business, takes control
and avenge his father's attempted murder. He kills Sollozzo and his police protector,
solidifying his position as the new head of the Corleone crime family.

As Michael consolidates his power, he eliminates rival mob bosses and eventually becomes
the most powerful crime boss in the country. He also marries his true love Kay Adams. The
first part of the film ends with Michael as the head of the Corleone crime family, with all his
rivals eliminated and in a position of power.

The second part of the film deals with the consequences of Michael's actions. Michael's
brother Fredo is revealed to have betrayed the family, and Michael is forced to have him
killed. His wife Kay leaves him, unable to cope with the life of a mafia wife. In the end,
Michael is left alone, having lost everything he held dear in his quest for power. The film
concludes with Michael as the lone head of the Corleone crime family, with all his loved ones
gone and the weight of his actions on his shoulders.
