Defense in Chess

If one of your pieces is under attack, there are five ways to

defend against the attack. These are the following: (ABCDE)

1. Simply move away. (AVOID)

2. Interposing another piece in the path

of the attacker. (BLOCK)

3. Capturing the attacking piece.

(CAPTURE)

4. By protecting it. (DEFEND)

5. ELSEWHERE on the board, you

might be able to make your own threat,
against a piece of equal or greater value,
such as the opponent’s king.

Defense from the point of view of the attacker:
If you're attacking one of your opponent's pieces and he
protects it with another piece, you'll want to know how
to get rid of the defender.
