Right Hand Grip (and Left Hand for Matched Grip)
Palm facing ground.
Thumb opposite first knuckle,
Thumb always on side of the stick.
All fingers curled around stick for added control. =
No gaps between fingers. bd
Don’t let fourth and fifth fingers hang off of the stick, this will cause a loss
of control.
AVY
Left Hand Grip (Traditional)
1. Thumb always touches first joint of first finger.
2. Stick rests around the first joint on the fourth finger.
3. Little finger has the same contour as the fourth finger. Don’t curl the little
finger in excess. This causes forearm tension.
4. Turn the wrist like turning a door knob.
General Playing Reminders
1. Grips stay the same at all volume levels and stick heights.
2. Grips stay the same when sticks are in or out.
3. Elbows slightly away from the body.
4. Sticks form a 90 degree angle.
5. Sticks do not rest on the drum head.
6. Beads of the sticks are at the center of the head for snares and bass drums.
7. Beads are as close as possible without touchin;
8. Sticks should go straight up and down, no slicing.
9. Play mainly from the wrist,
10. Practice in front of a mirror.
When trying to achieve visual perfection, grip ‘s one on the most important
factors, If all grips are identical, the chances are better for accurate stick heights,
visuals, stick angles, and tone productionSTICK HEIGHTS
We define sticks heights for two reasons:
1. Visual perfection
2. Aural Perfection
If all drummers i the line play the same heights, we have a betterchance of
looking uniform and sounding uniform. It is very difficult to play together when
players are playing the same notes at different heights, Stick heights also affect
volume and tone output of each drum in the line. If everyone is playing at the
same height, this will result in a more balanced drumline.
