BIOGRAFIA

Fermín del Toro y Blanco nació el 14 de julio de 1806 en El Valle, Caracas. Fue un
importante Político, escritor, diplomático y educador. Desde joven militó en las filas del
Partido Conservador. Contrajo matrimonio con su prima María de la Mercedes Tovar
Toro. Ocupo cargos públicos; fue Ministro de Hacienda, Ministro Plenipotenciario,
Diputado y Vicepresidente del Congreso. Fue profesor de filosofía, lógica e ideología.
Los escritos de Fermín Toro le dieron gran reconocimiento en lengua española, y
abarcan los géneros de: ensayo, oratoria, narrativa, crónica y poesía. Es notable su
discurso pronunciado en memoria del Libertador Simón Bolívar, en el que planteó el
traslado de sus restos a Venezuela y su novela por entregas “Los Mártires” (1842) fue
considerada la primera novela producida en el país. Muere en Caracas el 23 de
diciembre de 1865. Sus restos reposan en el Panteón Nacional desde el 23 de abril de
1876.

BIOGRAPHY

Fermin del Toro y Blanco was born on July 14, 1806 in El Valle, Caracas. He was an
important politician, writer, diplomat, and educator. From a young age he was a
member of the Conservative Party. He married his cousin María de la Mercedes Tovar
Toro. He occupied public positions; he was Minister of Finance, Minister
Plenipotentiary, Representative and Vice President of the Congress. He was a professor
of philosophy, logic and ideology. Fermín Toro's writings gave him great recognition in
the Spanish language, and cover the genres of: essay, oratory, narrative, chronicle and
poetry. His speech in memory of the Liberator Simón Bolívar, in which he proposed the
transfer of his remains to Venezuela, is notable and his serial novel "Los Mártires"
(1842) was considered the first novel produced in the country. He died in Caracas on
December 23, 1865. His remains have rested in the National Pantheon since April 23,
1876.
