Highest score of the activity: 120 points
The activity starts on: Thursday, August The activity ends on: Saturday,
31, 2023 September 30, 2023
With this activity, you are expected to achieve the following learning
outcomes:

Learning Outcome 1: Solve deterministic decision problems through hierarchical

analytical models and game theory in production, logistics and service systems.
The activity consists of:

Below you will find 5 exercises, the first two on decision criteria under uncertainty,
benefits and costs, and the following three on game theory, two-person zero sum and
(2xn) and (mx2) games, which you must develop and present in the discussion
forum of task 1, and submit collaboratively in the assessment environment.

In the Exercises 1 and 2, the student must solve the proponed questions by Criteria
of Laplace, Wald or pessimistic, optimistic, Hurwicz and Savage to determine the
decision process. Consider the nature of the problems.

Exercise 1. Laplace, Wald or pessimistic, optimistic, Hurwicz and Savage

criteria (Profit Matrix)

Optimal solution for the planting season: the AgroBoy company can plant corn,
wheat or soybeans, or use the land for pasture. The benefits associated with the
different actions depend on the amount of rainfall: heavy rainfall, moderate rainfall,
light rainfall, or drought. The payment matrix (in thousands of dollars) is estimated
as is presented in the annex 1.

According to the data of the annex 1 – Exercise 1, applying:

• Laplace criterion
• Wald – pessimistic criterion
• Optimistic criterion
• Hurwicz criterion
• Savage criterion
• Analyze the solutions alternatives to give a conclusion according to the
productive system that it refers.

Exercise 2. Laplace, Wald or pessimistic, optimistic, Hurwicz and Savage

criteria (Cost Matrix)

Optimal rental decision: An executive is interested in leasing a new high-end

vehicle and has contacted three car companies for pricing information. The executive
decided to choose the lease option that minimizes his total costs for 36 months. The
difficulty is that he is not sure how many miles he will drive over the next three
years. For purposes of this decision he considers it reasonable to assume that he will
drive 12,000 miles per year, 15,000 miles per year, or 18,000 miles per year. With
this assumption, the executive estimated his total costs for the three lease options,
which are presented in annex 1.

According to the data of the annex 1 – Exercise 2, applying:
• Laplace criterion
• Wald – pessimistic criterion
• Optimistic criterion
• Hurwicz criterion
• Savage criterion
• Analyze the solutions alternatives to give a conclusion according to the
productive system that it refers.

Exercise 3. Two-Person Zero-Sum Games

Optimal decision for political campaign: Two candidates for Governor of the
Department of Zeeland must decide which city to visit on the eve of the August
elections. The same four cities - Aquitanie, Grenoble, Lyon, Nantes - are available to
the two candidates and are listed as strategies 1 to 4 for each candidate. Travel plans
should be made in advance, so candidates should decide which city to visit before
knowing the other candidate's plans. The values in the table in annex 1 show the
thousands of green candidate voters based on the strategies selected by both
candidates.

• Finding the value of the zero-sum two-person game using the Maximin -
Minimax strategy for the marketing plan.
• Using excel, formulate as a Linear Programming Problem via Excel Solver Add-
in and analyze the saddle point of the given situation.
• Finding the probabilities of the game and determinate the value of Zero-Sum
Two-Person Game.
• Interpret the results of the game value and indicate which city each candidate
should visit according to the conditions of the problem.

Exercise 4. Game Theory method (game 2xn):

Game Value for marketing campaign: Two technology companies E1 and E2,
manufacture an innovative smartv and compete with each other for market share. In
planning a market strategy for the coming year, each company considers strategies
designed to gain market share over its competitor. The hundreds of customers that
E1 can gain over E2, depending on the strategies of both players, are presented in
table 1: Clients that E1 can win against E2.

• Check if the game has a pure strategy solution using the maximin-minimax
criterion.
• Determine the optimal solution of the game for the two players through the
graphical method, indicate the value of the game and the probabilities for each
strategy of each player. Use the Geogebra tool for graphs (Annex 2).
• Interpret the results of the game value and the strategies of each player for
decision making according to the conditions of the problem.

Exercise 5. Game Theory method (Game mx2):

Game Value for television stations: Two television stations in a market compete
for viewership. Local programming choices for the 5:00 p.m weekend broadcast time
slot include a sitcom rerun, a newscast, or a home improvement show. Assume that
the CNP station has three programming choices and the BCN station has two choices
to make its preseason program selection before it knows what the other television
station will do. The changes in thousands of viewers for station CNP's audience are
presented in Table 2: Changes of viewers for station CNP's audience.
