Question 1
Using specifications from Table 1.1, determine the force applied at the lever end of a band brake.
Question 2
The following specification in Table 2.1 refer to a 360 hydrodynamic journal bearing. Determine the:
a) amount of artificial cooling required;
b) the mass of the lubricating oil required.

Question 3
The following specifications in Table 3.1 is for a single plate clutch. Considering uniform wear theory,
determine the:
a) inner, outer and the mean radii of the plate;
b) time to attain full speed by the machine, if the moment of inertia of the rotating parts of the machine
is 2.2 kg.m2;
c) ratio of power transmitted with uniform wear to that with uniform pressure.
Table 3.1 Single Plate Clutch specification
Power 8 kW
Speed 1000 rpm
Axial pressure 70 kN/m2
Radius Outside 1.25 Ri
Coefficient of friction 0.25
Question 4
Assuming uniform pressure condition of a cone clutch (specifications in Table 4.1), determine the:
a) axial load;
b) power transmitted at 1000 rpm.
Table 4.1 Cone Clutch Specifications
Maximum contact surface radius 150 mm
Minimum conduct surface radius 125 mm
Face angle of the cone 20°
Coefficient of friction 0.25
Allowable normal pressure 140 MPa
Question 5
A multi plate clutch, having number of pairs of contact surfaces, n1= 2 and n2 = 1, has outer and inner radii
1000 mm and 600 mm respectively. The maximum intensity of pressure at any point is 0.2 N/mm2, when
uniform wear conditions have been reached. If the coefficient of friction is 0.25, determine the speed (N) of
the clutch, if the power generated = 31582.807 kW.

Question 6
Figure 6.1 shows a journal bearing operating at Sommerfeld number = 0.08 and a radial clearance = 0.083.
Determine the:
a) oil viscosity;
b) coefficient of friction using Petroff’s equation;
c) power loss.
Question 7
Two pulleys, one 450 mm diameter and the other 200 mm diameter, on parallel shafts 1.95 m apart are
connected by a crossed belt. The larger puller rotates at 200 rev/min, if the maximum permissible tension in
the belt is 1 kN, and the coefficient of friction between the belt and puller is 0.25, determine the:
i. angle of contact between the belt and each pulley.
ii. length of the belt required.
iii. power to be transmitted by the belt.
