ACTIVITY NO.

COLLECTION, PACKAGING AND PRESERVATION OF BLOOD

I. Apparatus/Materials
Liquid blood sample, gauze pad, clean sterile cotton cloth, paper bag, clean scissor, blood stain cloth,
glass container (like test tube, clean small glass bottle with robber or cork stopper, melted paraffin wax),
cotton or cloth-like cardboard box clean white paper.

II. Procedure
1. Liquid Blood Samples
1.1 Blood in liquid pools-pick up on a gauze pad, clean sterile cotton cloth, air dry.
1.2. Separately place in a paper bag.

2. Fresh moist stains on clothing, blankets, cloth


2.1. With clean scissors, cut out a portion (not to exceed % of the total stained areas) of the
stained cloth
2.2. Place this in a clean glass container (test tube, small glass bottle, etc.). 23. Seal the
specimen in the container with a tight-fitting rubber or cork Stopper.
2.3. Seal with melted paraffin wax, if necessary.
2.4. Label the specimen Adhesive tape, gummed paper, or an attached tag May be used
2.5. Pack the container in a cotton or cloth-lined cardboard box.

3. Fresh moist stains on solid objects and surfaces (wood):


3.1. With a perfectly clean instrument remove as such of the stain as possible
3.2. Place the stain so collected in a clean glass container
3.3 Allow the remainder of the stain to dry in the object (wood)

3.4. Remove a portion of the wood that contains in the stain


3.5. Pack it in a substantial box in such a manner as to prevent the stained fom contacting any
other surface, to avoid contamination.
36. Seal and label the box.
4. Dried blood stains

4.1. Cloth-wrap the item in clean paper, and place the article in a brown paper bag or box, seal,
and label the container
4.2 Small solid object (wood) wrap the whole stained object; seal and label properly
4.3 Large solid object (wood), cover the stained area with clean paper, and seal the edges down
with tape.
