If there is a fictional character that I identify the most, I would be Prince Bantugan of the story:

The Good Prince Bantugan. This story came from a Maranao Folklore, one of the tribes in my beloved
country, the Philippines. The story tackles about patriotism, romance, betrayal, and love between
families.

Prince Bantugan himself is a symbol of bravery, kindness and hope. His good attributes never
made him proud instead, it kept him on the ground. In our society today, no matter how good of a
person or how good our capabilities are, there are people who wants us down. The same thing
happened to Prince Bantugan, when he gave all his strength to win a battle but no one appreciated him
because of his envious brother, the king. I admired the action that Prince Bantugan did because instead
of confronting his brother- well, he could be a king if he wanted too given his qualities; n evertheless, he
was very sad and chose to go far away from the kingdom. It’s easy to show courage during a fight but it’s
harder and take a lot of courage too, to walk away from the people that you cherished.

Prince Bantugan’s character portrayed that even though he’s dead, there are still people who
will appreciate him even without knowing who he was. Like the King of the Kingdom-Between-Two-Seas
and Princess Datimbang, there is still a person who will accept you for who you are regardless of you’ve
been in life. “Some bad things have to happen before good things can.”, according to Becca Fitzpatrick.
Prince Bantugan’s death led to the remorse of the King, his brother, to feel a great sense of regret and
realization of what he did to him. Therefore, his brotherly love for Prince Bantugan prevailed at the end
enough for him to travel to the Region of the Dead to bring back his brother’s soul. The same realization
strikes me every time I hear or read the story of The Good Prince Bantugan. What are things that I’m
willing to do and sacrifice for my siblings? As an eldest, I was taught to always be patient and give in to
my brother and sister. There are times that I want to be selfish, but most of the times, my love for them
prevails. No, I don’t regret having them as my family. If I were to go to the Region of the Dead and bring
back my soul, I will still choose to have my brother and sister again.
