The Leboyer method of childbirth seeks to protect a newborn's delicate senses from the shock
of bright lights, harsh sounds, and rough handling. After the baby's head has begun to
emerge, lights are dimmed and the delivery room is quieted. The baby is not held by the
ankles and slapped to encourage the first breath; Leboyer states that since the fetus's spinal
column has never been in a straight position, this kind of handling is a severe shock to the
infant. Instead, the baby, with the umbilical cord still attached, is gently placed on the
mother's abdomen until breathing begins naturally. At this point, the baby is rinsed in a tepid
bath, rather than weighed on a cold scale. Babies born this way are usually relaxed and
smiling, not tense and screaming. Some studies of Leboyer babies and standard-delivery
babies have shown that Leboyer children are slightly more physically advanced and quicker
to learn. Parents of Leboyer children, in general, saw the birth as a positive, exhilarating
experience.

Understanding CALORIES

Calories describe the potential energy in food to maintain bodily functions, grow or repair
tissue, and perform mechanical work such as exercise. Food calories may take the form of fat,
carbohydrates, or proteins. Once consumed, enzymes act on these nutrients through metabolic
processes and break them into their perspective categories of fatty acids, glucose, and amino
acids. These molecules travel through the blood stream to specific cells where they are
absorbed for immediate use or sent on to the final stage of metabolism where they release
their stored energy through the process of oxidation.

In most cases little birds lay little eggs. The kiwi is an astonishing exception to this rule--it is
a smallish bird that lays a big egg. The kiwi, a flightless bird found in New Zealand, weighs
about four pounds, and its egg weighs, believe it or not, about one pound. That is one-fourth
of the birdʹs body weight! If an ostrich laid an egg that was in the same 4 proportion to the
ostrich as the kiwi egg is to the kiwi, an ostrich egg would weigh a whopping seventy-five
pounds instead of the usual three pounds.

When I was young I often heard people say, "Canada is the Scotland of North America." Only
recently did it occur to me that it might be worthwhile considering the extent to which this is
true. As Scotland is the hard northern cap to the British island, with the rich farmlands and
cities of England just below her, so is Canada to the United States. Both countries were
gouged by the retreating glaciers, which left them on the subsistence level as far as good
farmland was considered. It also gave them both a heritage of spectacular beauty uncrowded
by cities and towns, and of this they were both inclined to boast.
