CASE BASED QUESTIONS (4x3=12)
34. Read the source given below and answer the question that follows:
New forms of popular literature appeared in print, targeting new audiences. Booksellers
employed pedlars who roamed around villages, carrying little books for sale. There were
almanacs or ritual calendars, along with ballads and folktales. But other forms of
reading matter, largely for entertainment, began to reach ordinary readers as well. In
England, penny chapbooks were carried by petty pedlars known as chapmen, and sold
for a penny, so that even the poor could buy them. In France, were the “Biliotheque
Bleue”, which were low-priced small books printed on poor quality paper, and bound in
cheap blue covers. Then there were the romances, printed on four to six pages, and the
more substantial ‘histories’ which were stories about the past. Books were of various
sizes, serving many different purposes and interests.
(34.1) What were chapbooks? 1
(34.2) How Biliotheque Bleue was different from chapbooks? 1
(34.3) What were the new forms of literature introduced in Europe to attract the new readers?

35. Read the source given below and answer the question that follows:
Decaying plants in swamps produce peat. Which has a low carbon and high moisture
contents and low heating capacity. Lignite is a low grade brown coal, which is soft with
high moisture content. The principal lignite reserves are in Neyveli in Tamil Nadu and
are used for generation of electricity. Coal that has been buried deep and subjected to
increased temperatures is bituminous coal. It is the most popular coal in commercial
use. Metallurgical coal is high grade bituminous coal which has a special value for
smelting iron in blast furnaces. Anthracite is the highest quality hard coal. In India coal
occurs in rock series of two main geological ages, namely Gondwana, a little over 200
million years in age and in tertiary deposits which are only about 55 million years old.

PHASE – I_EXAMINATION SOCIAL SCIENCE

The major resources of Gondwana coal, which are metallurgical coal, are located in
Damodar valley (West Bengal, Jharkhand). Jharia, Raniganj, Bokaro are important
coalfields. The Godavari, Mahanadi, Son and Wardha valleys also contain coal deposits.
Tertiary coals occur in the north eastern states of Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal
Pradesh and Nagaland.
(35.1) Which reserves are important for lignite in India? 1
(35.2) In what extent do you agree that bituminous coal is metallurgical coal? State its one
property. 1
(35.3) Why is coal associated with geological ages? State where it is found? 2
36. Read the source given below and answer the question that follows:
Perhaps more than development, it is reasonable to expect democracies to reduce
economic disparities. Even when a country achieves economic growth, will wealth be
distributed in such a way that all citizens of the country will have a share and lead a
better life? Is economic growth in democracies accompanied by increased inequalities
among the people? Or do democracies lead to a just distribution of goods and
opportunities?
Democracies are based on political equality. All individuals have equal weight in electing
representatives. Parallel to the process of bringing individuals into the political arena on
an equal footing, we find growing economic inequalities. A small number of ultra-rich
enjoy a highly disproportionate share of wealth and incomes. Not only that, their share
in the total income of the country has been increasing. Those at the bottom of the society
have very little to depend upon. Their incomes have been declining. Sometimes they find
it difficult to meet their basic needs of life, such as food, clothing, house, education and
health.
In actual life, democracies do not appear to be very successful in reducing economic
inequalities. The poor constitute a large proportion of our voters and no party will like
to lose their votes. Yet democratically elected governments do not appear to be as keen
to address the question of poverty as you would expect them to. The situation is much
worse in some other countries. In Bangladesh, more than half of its population lives in
poverty. People in several poor countries are now dependent on the rich countries even
for food supplies.
(36.1) Why it is expected that democracy will reduce the economic disparities? 1
(36.2) What is a reasonable expectation from a democratic government? 1
(36.3) why do some poor countries depended on the rich countries? 2
