The Israelites were not spared from life’s challenges.
As a people, they cried and lifted up to God their fears
and anxieties.
The Big Question: How did God respond to the Israelites’ hunger for
freedom and liberation?
Joseph welcomed his father with joyful
embrace and tears. The Pharaoh
invited them to live in the land of
Goshen, a fertile region in the
northeast Nile Delta, and excellent
grazing area. There Joseph settled his
father and brothers and gave them a
possession in the land of Egypt, in the
best of lands.
What happened to the Israelites after so many
years living in Egypt?
Did you know that:
● The Pharaoh at that time did not know of Joseph and his
service to the earlier Pharaoh. He enslaved the Hebrews
(Israelites) once they drove out the former rulers, the
Hyksos
Did you know that:
● The Israelites patiently lived in sub human condition.
Did you know that:
● The Egyptian government imposed hard labor on them and
they were expected to protect and defend a society that was
blind and insensitive to their rights as people.
Did you know that:
● They were alarmed at the growing number of the Hebrews
for they feared the Hebrews might join Egypt's enemies.
Did you know that:
The Pharaoh ordered the midwives to kill all Hebrew male
infants.
How did God reach out to
His chosen people, the
Israelites?
God appeared to
Moses in a burning
bush at Mt.
Horeb, the
mountain of
God.
God told Moses that He had
witnessed the sufferings and heard
the cries of His people in Egypt. He
came to rescue them from slavery
and then commissioned Moses to free
His people from foreign oppressors
and to lead them to the Promised
Land.
God’s name which is revealed
to Moses as YAHWEH means “I
am who Am”. This name
implies a God who does not
change.
The call of Moses marked the
beginning of God’s
intervention to save his people
from oppression.
God ordered Moses to
return to the Pharaoh
and God’s requested
the release of the
people so that they
might serve Him. The
Pharaoh rejected
Moses’ request. A
plague struck Egypt
after each rejection.
THE SIGNS AND WONDERS IN
EGYPT
1. The Nile river turned to blood
2. Frogs overran the land of
Egypt
3. Gnats infested man and
animals
4. Flies swarmed upon the
houses of Egyptians
5. Pestilence afflicted all
livestock
THE SIGNS AND WONDERS IN
EGYPT
6. Boils infected man and
animals
7. Hail struck man, animals and
tree
8. Locusts ate whatever was left
from the hail
9. Darkness covered the land
10. Death of the first- born
* The Lord commanded
that the historical event of
the Passover was to be
commemorated by a ritual;
meal each year, in memory
of that night in Egypt when
the Lord passed over the
houses of the Israelites
and led them out of the
land of slavery.
● The name Exodus
means “departure” and
refers to the most
important event in
Israel’s history, the
departure of the people
of Israel from Egypt,
where they had been
slaves.
● The Israelites departed
from Egypt. The Lord
guided His people with
the pillar of cloud by
day and the pillar of fire
by night (Ex. 13: 22).
The cloud and the fire
symbolized God’s
guiding presence over
His people.
● The Pharaoh,
however, changed
his mind about
letting the Israelites
go. He prepared his
army and chariots
and started in
pursuit of the
Israelites.
● When the Israelites
saw the Egyptians
behind them and the
Red Sea before
them, they
complained to
Moses that they
should neve have
left Egypt.
● Moses encouraged the
people to trust God. He
assured them that God
would protect and save
them from their enemy.
The Red sea parted for
the Israelites at Moses’
command and the
Egyptians perished when
the Red sea flowed back
to its normal depth.
The defeat of the Egyptians was a privileged
moment of Yahweh’s self-revelation to His
people. The Israelites witnessed God’s
deliverance. Israel believed and feared the
Lord.
What are the qualities of God
experienced by the Israelites?
• He is constant and faithful in
His love for people.
• He is dependable and cares
passionately for those who
are oppressed and suffering.
• He does not tolerate any form
of inhuman treatment.
• He puts down from their
throne those who
misuse and abuse their
power to rule.
• He is a God of justice.
• God is faithful.
• God is
compassionate.
• God is merciful.
● The God of Israelites is also our God who,
through the inspired Word of Scripture, is
revealed as the faithful one, full of compassion
and mercy.
● In spite of the many trials be settling the world
today, the truth remains: GOD IS GOOD ALL THE
TIME; GOD HAS NOT GIVEN UP ON US! God
continues to journey with us in good and in bad
times.
● God makes possible our “exodus” from darkness
to light, from a life of doubt to a life of trust.
