GREG: l{e are all interested in a lot of different types of muslc and that manlfests itself ln the music we play. Reggae, for example, has nothing to do with the culture in which we were broudrt up but we took that culture and interpreted it our srn $ray. }IATT: I hate people Just calling us a'reggae band because there ls a lot more than that going on. But graffiil has a history. Knowledge of this history wi I I enhance the understanding of graffiti as art, and even enhance your pleasure when you see it---,,yeah, yeah,,, you wi ll sty when you see some prime example. The roots of modern graffiti go back forty years to the first FUCK YOu that appeeared on the subway wai t. This was fol lowed by the image of a big boner and bal ls, which only restated the message. This message was aimed at the American square, who at that time was known as the man in the grey flannel suit. This guy wouid be going to work, glance up, read the i.nsult, then guickly avert his eyes from the unaughty' message. He tried to train himself noi to look at graffiti, but was snagged by the graphic profile of the prick. Foi led into taking a furilve glance, he would then feel the pain of lnsult in the baslc meaning of the
time.

never went away. Any way, the sguares had trained themselves not to glance at wall lnscriptions--at least they were trying. Maybe a qulck peek, but never staring. This is the setting that made modern grafflti take off. New forms of letters which configrured into shapes of words were substituted for conventional English. This was the ingenious foil, the genius of the art. Now the square would glance furtively at the .writing on the wal l, glance away and realize that he couldn't guite make out what was written, and glance back for a closer look. This was the sting. This was the big FUCX y0U. The poor square not only gets insulted, as the original rucK you message is perpetually implied in allwall graffiil, but he gets caught actually trying to get insulted.
In the mean time FUCK y0U,s and boners lrere becoming boring to the artists while the need to insult the sguares
image.
